custom glass

I'm building a cage for a Jungle Carpet. What kind of glass should I use for the door? The glass is going to be 46"x18" 1/4" thick.
Is tempered glass necessary?

Is tempered glass necessary?

over here in the uk we use british safety standard glass

sorry im unsure what the american equivilent of that would be

it will imo need to be toughened glass of some kind as an adult jungle has a fair bit of power when it comes to pushing against the glass

cheers shaun

Re: custom glass

It's not necessary, but it is better, even better yet is the laminated shatterproof glass.

What I do is ask the glass shop for pieces that have been cut and then either never picked up or rejected by the customer.

I get nice panels for $5 each that way, and the glass shop is happy to get rid of the odd sizes.

then I just cut the wood to match the glass.

But anyways back to your original question, safety glass is great for peace of mind that if you knock something into it that the glass will not produce any of those jagged pieces that can either cut you, a family member or your snake.

anything strong as ive had carpets that go into a bit of a frenzy at feeding time and will strike the glass as soon as they detect your heat signature as you open the tank for feeding.

they can hit it quite hard

cheers shaun

Re: custom glass

Thanks for pointing that out mate.. I didn't think about that part.

I use safety glass for my custom builds anyhow, It offers a peace of mind.

I know out Savannah monitor is hard on his glass, he even used to grab his food bowl in his mouth and bang it against the cage.

Re: custom glass

I always used 1/2 inch to inch thick plex glass for custom cages.
Shauny Tempered glass is what used in car for side windows. Most of my house window have been replace with tempered glass has my 11 year can break them. Cost more but worth the money.

sounds like my guy who would "re decorate" his cage
it got so bad when i cleaned it out and put every thing back in i would just toss it in and watch him for hours building hides and stuff

Re: custom glass

I`ve got a load of vivs I made myself and they all have NON tempered 4mm float in them. Tempered is always better, maybe even essential for really big snakes but for smaller stuff? Not essential....
