Re: cheapets place to get a jungle set up
Don't work under the general assumption that you have to buy a viv man. You need heat, hides, water, and something for them to climb on. Yes, you will need a thermometer and a heat source. This is where the money will be spent. If you can get a big enough rubbermade or sterlite tub, your snake will be perfectly happy in there. He does not want to see you, or what is going on outside his world. He just wants to be warm, have fresh water, and have a place to hang out once in awhile...Oh,and most importantly... FED ME!

Re: cheapets place to get a jungle set up
They love to climb. You can go outside find a branch cut to the size you need put it in your cage. Just make sure to treat it. Best way is soak it in bleach water over night, rinse it really good, and put in the oven on 400 for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then rinse again and let air dry. Make sure to keep a close eye on it in the oven. Don't want it burning.

they do like to hang on branches but the branches dont have to be too high.
all my adult carpets are in 4x2x2ft vivs
as long as theyre off the ground carpets love them just fine
a young carpet in a tub say 12 inches high with branches 7 to 9 inches off the ground is just fine for them.
carpets are semi arboreal so love climbing they also have a pre hensile tail that allows them to grip just like we would with our hands and fingers
a young carpet in a tub with a heat mat and thermostat would do just fine for the first year to 18 months
its better using ceramic set ups once their into there bigger vivs
this gives you a good gradient of ambient air temperatures
mats are pretty crap at heating air in bigger vivs
if you dont want to go to the trouble of cleaning branches then buy a wooden brush shaft from a hardware store or plastic piping, cut to fit the tub they make great perches
cheers shaun

when i use tubs i place a heat mat under roughly a quarter to a third of the outside of the bottom of the tub
once i move onto wooden vivs i use ceramic bulbs
i use thermostates with both methods also a heat guard over the ceramic bulbs
my general rule is
mats for tubs
ceramics for vivs
cheers shaun

my mistake mate
i thought it was one of those reptile radiator things you get
if its a heat mat then place it a quarter to a third way of the outside on the bottom of the tub
this will be your hot end
if the cool end is not cool enough then just move the tub further off the mat so less covers the bottom
i use 2 of those small cheap dial thermometers
one on the floor hot end one on the floor cool end
this gives you ground temps
as said mats dont heat the air great so i run my tubs according to the ground temps
84f to 86 f hot end
cool end 76f to 80f
cheers shaun

Re: cheapets place to get a jungle set up
you could get plexi glass sheets at a hard ware store for around $1.50 a foot (or at least around here) and then using 1x4's and a sheet of ply wood for a frame with a wire top? (worked well with my iguanas) not sure about any thing else i only spent about 70~100 total making a decent cage about 4ft long 3ft deep and 3ft tall

Re: cheapets place to get a jungle set up
UTH = under tank heater. aka heat mat
Both my Yellow Anaconda and BRB are in 106 quart tubs. With UTH, two hide, water bowl. Something else that works really good for branches in tubs is wooden bird perches. They come with a bolt coming out the end and a wing nut. Just drill a hole to put the bolt threw. Just measure your tub to make sure you get the right size.
