annoyed... help
dont really need help, just very irritated!! here is the story:
I was sitting in my Anatomy 2 class learning about cat muscles and disecting one, while a friend brings up my snakes... so i tell everyone about them and this and that...
well my teacher, who is also a high school bio teacher along with college instructor chirps in...."you know, they can get out the tank any time they want"
ME: "dont worry lol, i have locks on all the tanks, they cant get out"
HER: "dont matter, they can ball up in the corner and break the glass"
ME: "never heard of that, dont think it will happen, although i do believe they could easily break glass"
HER: "yes it can" "also i had a kid tell me that one got out and went around its neck"
ME: "could be true but prolly just doing it for warmth, snakes dont just go around killing stuff"
HER: "i wouldnt trust them, specially around kids"
ME: "well im not you"
HER: "lol have a good day"
Not too bad of a talk with my teacher, but the bad thing is, NOW my fiance thinks shes right about just coming out of the cage and killing me!!!! she never beleives me and its all my teachers fault! she also is iffy about me haing them once we have kids, how can i convince her that they are okay?
so could they break the glass and get out/
would they want to even do that?
sorry for the extremly long post and sort of un-interesting story, but i need this clarified....
THANKs!!!

Re: annoyed... help
Sounds like it would of been an extremely interesting conversation. I believe that larger species could easily do this as i have heard of them pushing walls out in enclosures. As long as you use strong glass upwards of at least 6-8mm for 3m snakes you should be right. It also depends a lot on what your cages are made out of and what dimensions your piece of glass is. Reallistically though most snakes will be fine in a locked and secure cage, but for the bigger guys a strongly made tank and nice thick glass is your best bet.

Re: annoyed... help
Makes sense, I believe it could happen, bit she said my ball python could, that I don't believe... and as for the coming out to randomly suffocate me? Also don't believe..
It was a good convoy, except I got offended and sort of walked out of the room. Teacher apologized to my fiance for up setting me. Wasn't her comment, but her attitude.
What size glass for an adult ball, and brb, and corn? Just curious....

Re: annoyed... help
For those species i would personally use 6mm glass. I use 6mm safety glass for most of my collection and really have only gone bigger on 4 tanks. In one tank i put in 10mm safety glass as its dimension were quite big meaning the weak spot in the center was pretty big.
I dont believe a ball could break a mdf or plywood enclosure, it could maybe break 3mm glass.
As for suffocating you its extremely unlikely, it would prefer to go and hide somewhere rather then go for a kill lol.

Re: annoyed... help
Thats too bad. The teacher sounded like she was TRYING to turn you off to snakes. Heres the thing...dogs can kill you too.
That being said, snakes, especially the larger species should be seriously respected. They are stronger than most people realize and caution should be exercised when handling them. If you have children in the house, then you should definitely make sure the snakes are locked up and proper handling is practiced when around children.
But these things are true with any animal. I get irritated with the "snakes will kill everything in sight" conversations as well.

Re: annoyed... help
I have never heard of it happening. I think you teacher full of icon_bs.gif. If your worry about it build or buy cages. Glass one suck. If your going to have kids it's worth the money to buy cages like Boaphile, Animal Plastic,Boamaster, or any of the pvc or plastic type cages work great. Hold humitdy and heat great, easy to clean, light weight, and very hard to break. Plus they're stackable. Mine have two key locks. I have never had a snake escape one of these cages. Here's a pick of a person who keeps Big RTB and Yellow anacondas in them. DSCF3819.jpg
Here's a pick of mine when i first got them. Sometime you can find them use for cheap. I got my 4 4"x2"x1" used for $300.00 New they would be $200.00 each.

Re: annoyed... help
I'd have invited the teach over to meet the snakes. IMO the best way to get people to really understand is to involve them.

Re: annoyed... help
Is it just me or is it too much to expect a "teacher" of biology to know better?

Re: annoyed... help
Keep trolling Craigslist and kingsnake.com and you just might find used cages turning up. I got mine when a business was switching over to all new plastic cages. Mine are handmade melamine, and while not the prettiest, do the job required just fine. For 9 5'x2'x1' and 3 6'x2'x1' and 2 stands, I paid $300.
