The Uneducated piss me off.

This kind of thing happens all the time... but this was the last straw for me...
My mom called me the other day asking to go to her friends house because she saw a snake in her yard and got spooked...
She asked one of the Mexicans mowing her neighbors yard, what kind of snake it was and if it was venomous. He told her it's a Cottonmouth... very venomous, and will kill her and her family... he then hacked the snake to pieces... she took me to the snake and I found a gravid corn snake... I told her it wasn't a a cottonmouth, but left out the fact she was gravid.
I take Duke, my ball python, and buttercup one of my bloods, around and give little 'shows' to educate people all snakes don't kill people...

Re: The Uneducated piss me off.

Fortunately we dont have the issue here with wild snakes but can appreciate how annoying it must be.

We also take our snakes to schools and nurserys for educational purposes - love seeing people reactions and opinions change over a hour of chatting and showing off the snakes.

Keep up the good work!!

yeah i had a friend call and say he had a copperhead in his garage. when i got there i bet him $20 i would pick it up. he offered $40. needless to say i took his money trying hard not to giggle. the next day i folded and gave his money back and told him it was a harmless garter snake.

Re: The Uneducated piss me off.

as big rob said we dont have that problem here.

re the states in general
after thinking about it ive come to the conclusion that imo its down to lazyness.they cant be bothered learning what the dangerous snakes look like.so they just clump all snakes into the " its dangerous category "

so rather and learn to distinguish them, its kill kill kill them all as im too lazy a***d to learn what the harmless ones look like ...!!

sad sad way of doing things mate

pity your mums friend had not called you sooner.it must have been a horrible site to see when you got there.

cheers shaun

My neighbor hacked up a baby milk snake once, I hate seeing this too.

What a tragic end to a harmless snake.

Re: The Uneducated piss me off.

irrational fears are also strange to me, i don't know how many dirty looks i've gotten when i mention that i keep snakes and how everyone seems to think that all snakes have gigantic fangs and will inject venom at any opportunity. i suggest them to read a book.

Re: The Uneducated piss me off.

This is the fear mongering our parents, community and news put in our heads from a young age. I hate going out to peoples farm houses and seeing tigers, browns, copperheads, red bellies and various other venomous snakes hanging from fence posts. This to me is a statement to say look how tuff i am i killed a deadly snake. I hate the unrational thinking people have about snakes in general and i would drive out of my way to relocate any of these species if someone called or told me about it. I hear shovel stories all the time at work and really gets me angry. It really gets frustrating when they try to defend it by saying this tiger chased me when i was on my motorbike so i had no other choice. For gods sake your on a bike no snake can travel that fast, just ride away!!!!!

Re: The Uneducated piss me off.

hey! the snake in the anacondas movie could travel that fast! so it must be real!

lol funny story on the cover of Anaconda's 3 (yes there is more than 1 of these movies) the snake isn't even an anaconda, its 3 bp's, which aren't even a boid species (obviously lol) the snake on the front looks more like a saber tooth tiger, and has a funny looking crest on the back of its head like a triceratops type thing...

But hey, David Hasslehoff is in it...

lmao i know eh? even the sheer determination on hoffs face doesnt make this movie worth watching. his chest hair on the other hand might be a strong point.

Agreed I want to see The Hoff in a tiny bikini.... :P

But yea, I mean the natural fear of snakes goes back to religion, with Adam and Eve, if they replaced the Serpent with butterflies, we'd all have irrational fears of butterflies... while snakes would be cute and cuddly.. so I mean, humans are taught from a young age that snakes are dangerous, scary, gross, and wants you to eat fruit... or something like that. It's just some of us can see something for what it is.

Re: The Uneducated piss me off.

I also hate people being afraid of snakes for no good reason. My grandmother started praying for me every night that the devil would leave my house when she heard I had started keeping snakes. My mom won't look at them and insists I place a rolled-up towel at the bottom of the snake room door whenever she comes to visit. She is convinced they are going to get out of their cages, squeeze under the door and come and find her to "get" her. They have much better things to do with their snakey time, such as sitting basking under a light bulb and begging for food..lol.
I grew up in a family where all the women are terrified...like screaming, crying, running away like a rocket, scared of snakes. I however, was always fascinated by them. I caught garter snakes and milksnakes as a kid and always wanted to keep them. I have since at least gotten my mom to accept that they are not vicious, blood thirsty evil creatures, but she still is afraid of them.
