substrate?

so just a quick question on substrate.. i have a young jungle carpet python. at the moment im using plantaion soil from the pet store..it looks really nice and is making it alot easier to keep her tank at 60% humidity so far.. just wondering is this good stuff to use? should i be watching for anything as im using it or just out right change to something else?...

carpet pythons do not need raised humidity, I use newspaper for all my carpets, cheep and easy to clean out.

anyone else have thoughts on this? thanks for the info.. i have read a lot of different places that say they do and some say they dont.. would like more info on this

I only keep humidity up for my scrubs as they like it between 65%-85% humidity. I keep all my snakes on breeders choice cat litter, it is 100% recycled paper and 100% safe for snakes. It looks better than paper and is really cheap, i even use it for my scrubs which require humidity. I have kept jungles in the past and never gave them specific humidity and never had a problem ie RI or anything like that.

Percey - could you show a piccy of your viv's with this cat litter in? Am curious as to how it looks. Does it not mold with too mcuh humidity? Also is there a particular brand that is better than another?

thanks for all the info guys..i think im going to stay with the plantation soil for a while.. i love the way it looks and hell.. a beautiful thing like my baby deserves a beautiful home! whats a little more work to keep her as sexy as she can be!! ^-^

Hi Rob, use it in my scrub enclosures and that has pretty high humidity. it sits around 75% and does not mold. If there is too much humidity say high 90's then you get some moisture and therefore have to remove clumps of wet cat litter. As its cat litter though it does clump. I use breeders choice cat litter, but im from australia so i dont know what it would be called there, but there should be something very similar.

No Drama's Rob, I will throw up a couple more pics of different enclosures so you get a better idea ( these pics were all used in another thread im just incredibly lazy lol ). It cost me roughly $15 AUD for 30 litres, so i guess if they have this stuff over there it would be about 7 pounds or somewhere round that. That size bag will do 5 4x2x2 enclosures 1" deep.
