Heat radiating

Been thinking (and dreaming) snakes and come up with some questions.

If you have a stack of vivs do you have to consider heat radiating upwards when planning?

For example - the bottom viv has a ceramic - some of the heat is going to radiate upwards into the viv above - therefore that viv has a "natural" temperature that is higher than normal - you then heat this tank with a ceramic (which i guess will be working less due to the higher ambient temp) and the heat from this lamp will radiate up to the next viv and so on and so on.

When planning which snakes to put in which tanks - do you need to take this heat radiation into account - say putting snakes requiring higher temps in the top viv?

Sorry for rambling!!

Aye - i know htere will be thermostat in each viv - i assume that the top viv's ceramic wouldn't need to work so hard tho?

Re: Heat radiating

when i stack i put all my ceramic hot ends on the far right side of the viv.that way when stacked all the hot ends are at the same side so any heat that goes up the way just transfers itself into the next tanks hot end.id put the tank with the highest heat requirements at the top like you said mate.

in saying that if you put it on the bottom it would aid the tank above it to reach its own heat requirements.as long as it wasnt making the tank above too hot for its inhabitants then it will be fine mate.

all 3 tanks in my stack are run at the same temps so its not really been an issue with me.
cheers shaun

Re: Heat radiating

one thing to keep in mind is that even in a thermostatically controlled, stacked enclosure, the surface temperature of the floor area located directly over the hot spot of the enclosure beneath it will rise and can be dangerous to the animal inside. sometimes raising each enclosure a few inches off of each other is necessary to prevent this.

Re: Heat radiating

The three stack we are getting is one unit so no opportunity of an air gap in between each one - mainly where the question arose from i think!

In terms of the OCD Wayne you could be right - dreamed last nite that my snake room was bigger than our current house!! That we had a Savannah Monitor in an enclosure about the size of our house and that the floor of the snake room was covered in substrate so that the snakes could "play" - they all had their own vivs but no doors so they could come out to play when they wanted!!

I also dreamed that my mother in law picked up a huge python (retic i think form memory) and it did a poo that was a live rat that then ran across the room!!

The dreams you get when you go to bed stoned (prescribed drugs only i must say!!) are pretty amazing!! have many nights with no dreams but when they come they are good ones and i can remember pretty much every detail.
