Power Blackout???

Hi guys,

Had an interesting situation this morning - a powercut across our whole town! Luckily it was only about 15-20 minutes.

Just wondering what you guys do, if anything, with regards to a backup for your heaters for your snakes? If you get a blackout - what would you do?? I ended up just covering the whole Viv with a towel to keep the heat and humidity in.

Also how long would it need to be without any heat in the Viv to cause problems for my Corns?

Thanks for any responses!!

Re: Power Blackout???

Corn snakes are quite rugged, Over here they naturally occur in regions that have snowy winters, so as long as they do not freeze over solid, they will recover from a cold snap.

Same thing for my Garter Snake collection.

I worry more about out tropical animals, the Python and Chomper are from Africa, so I make sure they don't get cold.

We have a propane heater that needs no power, it can maintain a whole room at over 100 degrees (F)

That's cool - thought the corns should be ok - will have to think of alternative heating arrangements in the future should we expand our collection!

Re: Power Blackout???

its all austalian pythons i keep mate,so power cuts freak me out a bit.during the day my house runs at roughly 80f,so it would take a while for my house then the tanks to cool down.its really only through the night it would effect me a lot as the temps go quite low.the best i can think of doing for heat is fill hot water bottles.i thought if i put my snakes in pillow cases, then put them in a cardboard box,4 snakes per box,1 in each corner, then put a hot water bottle under the centre of the box,put a thermometer inside on the centre of the box, then it gives me a crude way of giving some emergency heat to my pythons.so far ive been very lucky that the longest power cut so far has been around 3 to 4 hours.all of those were during the day thankfully.
cheers shaun

Re: Power Blackout???

one year in much of southern canada and i heard even to the midwest states there was a power outage for about a week!, luckily in august, now this happened before i owned any of my current herps but my leos at the time seemed to be fine even at night when the temp dropped, i made sure to keep my room insulated however so as not to let too much heat escape as i was worried that the temps at night were too low, but they made it through it! does anyone else remember that? about 6 years ago? lol the americans blamed canadians and we blamed the americans, ended up being a faulty power station or something along those lines i believe... lol

Re: Power Blackout???

I remember that outage. People were racing up and down main street with glee here as there are about 20 stop lights in a 3 mile span. crazy.
