My Retic Thread..(photos and the like)

I take pics of my guys alot and figured instead of trying to find threads to share them I would have my own and add to them as I take them for those interested.

Here's my Female Yellowhead doing was she does best.. being Aboreal. I almost lost her in a tree once standing below one outside once lol. The water wasn't too warm or cold. She just likes to sit there all the time when I give her a warm bath.

Here's my adult Normal. He's like having (another) big dog. He knows and greets me when I walk up to his enclosure..and when he's out of it for that matter. Just all around a great snake and I hope my Yellowhead has the same demeanor when she grows up. I work with them alot.

Very beautiful 'tics! That's so cool that your boy greets you. Retics are one of the only snakes that can learn to recognize and differentiate between people. I love that about them. So cool!

Nice pictures! If I may a concern though... I know a guy here that gave his burms baths in the tub that did the same thing as your Tic is doing. With him sitting right across from the tub it accidently turned the hot water on and burned itself pretty badly in just the split second or two it took for him to get it off. Doesnt look like she is on the water handle part though. So not trying to make trouble just want you and her to be safe because Ive seen it and it aint good... Again nice looking animals!

Thank you Willow.. they are scary smart indeed. Its cool when I leave him out to roam that he'll come over and lift up my hand like a dog sometimes lol.

Thank you.. I'm always up for constructive criticism when it comes to doing something just a little bit better for them. I did think of the handle thing when she got up there and noticed she was just on the shaft part rather than the handle and thought "well she'll be fine... till I have to take her down".. cause she holds on to EVERYTHNIG. It would of been hard (but not impossible) for her to turn the hot water on as the handle would have had to turn another 90 degrees up for full hot water. It is definitely a concern for me ( as is getting her off the shower curtain rod w/o out having to put her in the enclosure with it lol) and I will always keep a watchful eye out for my guys... thank you for pointing that out and for the cpmpliments as well...

Since 'Tics are such good swimmers and can instinctively find water I set my tub up ahead of time and watch them search for it. When my adult started to head for the bathroom I took this vid!

Hi I have a normal retic. I love the fact you put time into your reytics.
My guy/gal has been through 2 other owners for its first 3 year. My retic gets moments were suddenly everything freeks it out. He'll strike at you if you look in the encosure , or be fine with me while handling it, then suddenly try to strike-,,not in a feed response way, but like thrashing out once then goes back all relaxed.
This has decreased quite a bit scince I got her, have you worked with a retic like this one b4?

Hi,

First thing I have to ask is how long have you had your Retic? It will take several weeks (or however long it needs) for acclimation. The enclosure is a safe haven. If he (lets assume) does not feel safe and secure within it.. he will act out of fear with a flighty and striking behavior. Assuming he is of adult size buy your post a strike from him would not only hurt like the dickens.. but do nerve damage (nevermind the bleeding) to your hand if he got a hold of it that would take weeks to recover if he got it squarely. The biggest investment you can make is but yourself a Monster hook. Mine is 4 feet long and you could use it for a pull up bar if you wanted. The "hook" part of it is plenty big enough to get into a coil and has a flat tip so you don't injure the snake.

I've dealt with this guy and couldn't be happier with the product. They are made to order so you can specify any detail you wish.

When I put him in the enclosure he was extremely tense and on guard. The misting bottle would make him snap wherever the mist would land.. including striking himself. It can be downright scary when you have this beast that can easily kill you and YOU have to prove to it your not going to hurt it!

On a personal note, I adopted mine as an adult as well. It was like wrestling an alligator. When they want to get away there is almost nothing stopping them. I had to read him so I knew when it became too dangerous to restrain him. Once trust is established however.. Retics are the only snake (in my experience) that can recognize their owners and he will come to you.

Hook training is best for the both of you. And DO NOT feed him out of the enclosure. It is far too dangerous. Here is a trick: Always slide the same side of the enclosure open to feed him. And if you have another door, slide the other one open to interact with him. Like I said,.. they're smart. I also put his meal in a small box. He has a totally different behavior when that box is in. You can also wear a shirt for 3 nights when you go to sleep then put it in there with him. It sounds to me he is just not used to you. Good Luck and be careful please!!
