might be getting a corn!!

so im trying to convince my fiancee to let me get a corn snake... theres one for sale at my petstore for 45 and is a snow, very cute lil guy.
just need to know a few things... how hard are they to keep? agressive? how long will a 10 gal last? whats a good substrate?

oh btw, my sand boa kenya, my BP eleanore, and my gecko, shelby are all doing great!! just fed them and they are all happy, also switched to reptile carpet for eleanore and she seems to like it, lots easier to clean.

all is well just a quick update for you guys!

Snows are beautiful! I actually just found one a week ago at a pet store near me that its previous owner had turned in due to "aggression". It's not actually an aggressive snake, just skittish and easily spurred to defensiveness. I like her so far; eats well, is gorgeous and I can breed her next season. Definitely get the snow corn near you- that's a great price- how large is it?

Corns are easy.. a 10 gallon take should last you a good while. They are not aggressive at all as long as you hold them for atleast 10min a day..except on the days they eat. My sister has 3 corns one is a snow. Beautiful.. good luck.

yeah im still debating on getting a corn.il get one sometime next year,you should go for it.me myself lik to get my snakes when they babys

corns are awesome lil dudes! my mr cob has a great personality, really good eater, hes growing like a weed to! have the pics taken just need to upload em here......

Corn snakes are very easy to keep, in fact they are recommended as good beginner snakes due to their hardiness. They need similar temperatures to most boids, i.e. ambient in the 80s and a basking spot up to 94 or so. They also don't require as high humidity as BPs or boas do. They generally are good eaters and usually docile and they only get about 4 feet long. That being said, a good-sized 4-footer will be around 500-600g so not a small snake.

thats awesome!! im a slight beginner so i want an "easy"snake to take care of, i also want something that gets a lil bigger.. so i think this will be good...

how long will a 10 gal last me?

depending on the initial size of the corn you get, probably a year or two. I just bought a yearling corn that I have in a 28 quart Sterilite tub in my rack but he would be ok in a 10-gallon. My big female is in a 2x2.5 cage.

Lol. Yeah I know how that goes. My fiance was overwhelmed with my snake addiction at first, but then he too was bitten by snake fever. Every time we swear we won't get anymore, another great deal or cool snake comes along. But I have to clear it with him every time....lol. Best of luck. A baby corn won't take up much room at all- tell him he won't even notice it's there! I've seen some incredibly tiny corn babies- like 6 inches long and thinner than a pencil. So precious! But I'd be afraid of it getting out and I'd never find a snake that small in my house.

.... I'm a guy... so tell her, lol but any way, she said i could get it, i just gotta wait till i got the extra money... whats a good substrate for them?... im usuing reptile carpet for my leo and BP, that good? or should somehting else be used for a baby corn?

I have my corns on aspen, but reptile carpet, or cypress mulch would also be good. Sorry about the gender mix-up.

lol its okay, its not like i have much around me for you to know im a guy.

i will prolly use rep carpet, bc i do feed snakes in same cage, and is much easier... i know some one will say that i shouldnt do that, but ive been doing it with both snakes so far, and when i pick them up, there nice as can be, but when theres a mouse they can tell...

but fiancee isnt budging on letting me get another snake unless i give up my sand boa

witch i dont want to, but might have to... i love her, but i dont want a snake that just lays undersand all night

yeah, I understand. I ended up parting with my sand boa in order to get more snakes that I could and would breed. My sand boa was very mean, and hid under its bedding all the time too. I had him for a year, and realized I was bitten every time I put my hand in the cage and I never saw him, I just spent money feeding him. I sold him to a lady who loves sand boas and works for a zoo, so he went to a good home.
As for feeding in the cages, I do it with all of my snakes, have for years, and have not had any problems. Snakes take a long time to associate things, some species are quicker than others, but as long as you don't only open the cage to feed it, you'll be fine. Just make sure you handle the snake often enough that it doesn't expect food whenever the cage door opens. Mine don't go into feeding mode until they smell the food thawing in the buckets.
