I know heat tape is the recommended method to go on a rack sysytem, but even after looking at all the websites showing how to use it I still am to confused on setting it all up. Will using the under tank heat pads work? I know it will cost more but if they will work I will use them.

Ya but it will be rediculously expensive i found some great websites when i was designing my custom tank that will use heat tape to heat it and i will try and find them and post them. basically though all you do is take an extension cord that has two leads fused together so you can have the two leads easily available to attach to the heat tape and solder on two copper alligator clips and wire that to a regular thermostat and set the temp. you can also use the extension cords actual plug in part to hook it up to a rheostat. i would do the heat tape that stuff is awesome, cheaper, more efficient, and thinner. not to mention will usually last longer.

They also sell clips with the heat tape that are very easy to use. I think I paid 6 bucks a set for those clips

Thats entirely possible I ordered them and the flexwatt from Reptile*Basics*Inc*::*Heating*::*Flexwatt*Heat*Tap e and your rite it says 5 but with shipping cost. Either way they are easy to use. I got the set with cord, clips, and insulators.
