Re: Breeding weight for male and female corn snakes

You will hear many folks refer to the "rule of 3's". 3 years old, 3 ft long & 300 grams. Its an OK rule for dealing with males but NOT for females. A 300g is NOT very big at all. Females should be at least 400gs prior breeding unless they are an older snake over 3 years old that has been fed properly that is just a smaller specimen. Not all snakes reach the same sizes some are larger some are smaller just like people etc. The key thing is not length & weight etc. BUT overall health. If you know the snake is sexually mature 2-3 years for sure for a female & is of a decent size approx 3 ft plus & at the very least 300gs (only in the case of an older female that isn't going to get any bigger) than it should be OK. In the case of males as long as their goo is good they are ready but females bred too young puts them at risk helath wise & can lead to eggbinding & even death. If there is any doubts wait another year for a female. Breeding them too small & too young takes a significant toll on them health wise & will shorten their lives drastically. Mark

Re: Breeding weight for male and female corn snakes

I had read that about the rule of three's and had read about people breeding 400grams females in as little as 2 years it was all a bit confusing
