I found a snake, please help me identify (pictures)

I found a snake at my house sitting in the flowerbed. I think it may be a water snake, being we have one of those huge city ditches next to the house. His underbelly is checkered with red and a dull yellow, and the top of him is a brown color with some bands. He has no fangs that I can tell of. I'm about to post some pictures with it so maybe that will help. Also he's about 2 1/2 feet long.

Thanks for the help.

Sorta looks like a water snake from the top. Bottom says ratsnake of some type. I don't know what animals are in your area though.

Could you get a full body picture and a picture of its head? I'd bet its a watersnake (keeled scales) but its impossible to tell without seeing the whole snake.

Yeah soon as my g/f wakes up I can get her to find her cam and I'll take a clearer/full body shot. Those 2 were with a camera phone.
