New Here A Little Bit of an Intro

Hey, I'm part of another forum as well and wanted to introduce myself on here.
I have one gorgeous new little baby ball python, I'm pretty sure he was a REAL late 07 as he's from my pinky to my elbow in length and kinda skinny but he's been pounding food and doing real well gaining body girth.
I did however find a few mites and I used Provent a Mite to treat his cage well they came back so I did it again and I took him to the vet today who really seemed to know his stuff and he's on Ivomec shots for the next 3 weeks, wanted to know what everyone thought about that. I've got some harsh reactions from some and others agree with the Ivomec. He's 63 grams and his Ivomec it 1/100th of a cc diluted down. Thanks!

Re: New Here A Little Bit of an Intro

Welcome I just us Reptile Relief on my snakes and enclosures and other people us Nix diluted with water. I have not tried it yet but will soon. There is a thread on here where it gives you the proper way to mix it.
Good luck
Cheers

Ivomec, which happens to be a drug for cattle parasites is completely unnecessesary to use for a ball python with mites. Your vet is an idiot, and you've been ripped off. Anything other than a small bottle of Nix ($9) is unecessary for treating mites.
I would highly recommend you read up on mite care for ball pythons before your vet does something so stupid, that your ball ends up dead.

He seemed to know what he was talking about. I know a bit about snakes and whatnot and diluted at 1/100th of a cc I doubt any negative effects from the ivomec.

Re: New Here A Little Bit of an Intro

Ivomec injections will work yes but put your snake at huge unnessicary risk & addtional stress thus increasing the risk as well. Ivomec is best used as a spray method not injected & as Mykee has already stated the NIX treatment for snake mites is the prefered method of those that know better. Provent A Mite works as well (same active ingredient) but both must be used properly & 2-3 times in order to achieve success. Ivomec will NOT kill mite eggs, both P.A.M. & NIX will. The ivomec shots will only kill the mites that are actually sucking on your snake & all the other mites will be A-OK for future bloodsucking action still. So huge & unnessicary risk to NOT rid yourself of the mites. I'll throw a link up to the NIX treatment for you. NIX is readily available at any pharmacy & all that is required is it, a spray bottle & water (a jug of distilled works good for the longest "shelf life" for the "NIX Mix") Mark

Re: snake mites

hi there i cant help but agree with the others he that say stay away from any injectable drugs for your snake, my snake also hade mites and what worked for me was to make a solution of water and betidine a type of iodine that you can find in most drugstores mix warm water with the betidine so that it looks like week tea then soak your snake in it for at least 15 min, m ake sure you dont soak his head completly just up to his pits, then take a small amount of ploysporin in your hands and rub down your snake you will have to do this at least once every other day also clean out every thing in his/her enclosure with hot bleach water if anything cant be washed that way then throw it away and replace with things that can be cleaned that way.remember to always let your enclosure air out before you put your snake back in it there should be no chemical smell in your enclosure. this process can take as long as 2to 3 weeks but it is the safest way i know

well good luck I wish you well shelley little joes mom

Re: New Here A Little Bit of an Intro

Well he's been done with the injections now for a couple weeks. Doing great. No mites, still pounding food and growing and in immaculate health.
I think I'm gonna stray outside the lines and say in my case and if your vet knows what he's doing Ivomec can work.

I bought some other spray mite relief stuff to wipoe him down with every month.

Doin' good!
