Aspen Bedding Stuck In My Ball Python's Mouth...What To Do?

Okay, I was under the impression that aspen bedding was safe and one of the best beddings for snakes. I used to use carpet but I recently switched to aspen and my snake keeps getting it stuck in his mouth, I don't understand why because I do not feed him in his cage...I've had him for almost 10 years and I'm worried this may cause health problems...anyone have any suggestions?

Its hard for us to say how hes getting it stuck, he really shouldn't be. Snakes are usually really good about getting things out of their mouth but its odd that its happening regularly; I'd watch him closely for awhile and see if you can find out whats happening. If not, and you don't feel comfortable keeping him on aspen then change it, personally I don't like it for bigger bodied snakes that need a decent amount of humidity. Its one of the best for things like corns, kings, milks, and so on but it molds extremely quickly when wet and doesnt do a thing to help humidity. My balls are all kept on newspaper, paper towel, or cypress mulch.

Re: Aspen Bedding Stuck In My Ball Python's Mouth...What To Do?

Thanks...he seems to be doing somewhat better, maybe just needed some time to adjust, I did notice that he's been knocking the bedding into his water bowl, I guess he could have gotten it in his mouth that way, seems a little strange but I shallowed out the bedding around the dish and hopefully that will keep him from doing that as well...i have noticed it's not helping the humidity level at all...not sure if I will continue to use aspen, probably should have stuck with what was working although the carpet was harder to clean!

Use paper towel, by far the best substrate. Put the water bowl on the hot side and instant humidity.

Yup, use paper towels. Simple.
