I think that the best choice would be either a Rosy Boa or a Ball Python

Sand boas are an option too, as well as hognoses.

Rosy Boas!!! These guys are terrific little snakes, they usually max out around ~3. One of my adults is oly 21" They come in a variety of colour and pattern variations from blue base colour with orange zig zags to black and white striped and everything in between They are super easy to care for (they can be a bit difficult to get started as babies, but once they are eating they are fine), most can live in a 10 gallon their entire life, they are very docile - some of the best natured snakes around, only bite if they mistook you for food, very slow moving, mostly just sit in your hand, great for display as they love to climb on things, and very tolerant of handling. Ok there's my usual rant

Adult Female (Mexican)

Adult Male (Mexican)

Some other good choices are, but not limited to, sand boas, rubber boas, childrens pythons, spotted pythons, and house snakes. Hope this helped

Garters and ribbons are nice also, and some varieties like plains or eastern garters come in a lot of pretty morphs. Plus it's waycool to be able to open a can of tuna or a box of frozen fish fillets to round out the feeding choices.

There are many great snakes. But the best one is the one that meets your desires. What would be the best one to me might not be even a good one to you.

What are you looking for in a snake?

Thanks for the kind words!

Dan,
Rosies vary in price depending on locality. You don't have a location listed in your profile. If you are in the states they can start at $60 US and you will have all localities to choose from. If you are Canadian they usually start at around $125 CDN and there isn't the same wide variety of locales to choose from, as there are not many people working with rosies up this way. Hope this helped
