Extreme Violence

Since about 3 or 4 days ago, my male and female have shown increasing amount of violence towards each other. I found a cut on her head, but we bought cleaning stuff from the guy we buy our food/animals from, and it seems to be healing very well, and very quickly now.

Anyway, in the last 2 days, we've split the tank into 2 by seperating them, as we found them both fighting (Going round in circles, try to bit whatever they can on each other) and we arent sure what to do now.

About 10 mins ago, i put them back together, the Male started jumping all over her, with an odd bite here and there, but the female was back to being submissive. Dont know if that will last.

This is the first spring coming that they will be adults, roughly 2 Yrs and 6 months come 21st March. Is this the reason that they are fighting all the time? They have never fought like this before, i mean, the male would jump all over her, and hes impregnated her about 4 or 5 times in her life (i know this lowers her lifespan somewhat, but there wasnt much i could do about it, we have to split a 40 galloon tank in 2 to seperate them, and doing it all the time whould stress them out due to lack of space)

So is it the fact that Spring is approaching thats got them riled up and fighting? Will it last all spring? Because the male could do some serious damage if he wanted to. And we cant keep them in what seems now to be a 20 gallon tank each.

Any ideas on what to do?/How long it will last?/Why they are doing it now and not before?

Also, if someone could direct me to a site or maybe tell me how to clip a Beardies claws, thatd be great. I dont want to attempt anything until im sure on how to do it.

Thanks a lot

Aaron

If you plan on keeping both beardies you are going to have to buy yourself a 50 gallon(at least) tank to keep one in and hope the 40 is big enough for the other. You should never keep 2 beardies in a tank that small, especially a male and a female. The female you have is getting very stressed out over being in a small enclosure and the male trying to mate with her. If you noticed that your female was getting attacked before you should have separated them much earlier in order to keep them both happy. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

It sounds like breeding to me. The male sounds ready, but the female doesn't. I would seperate them for now and only introduce them together for breeding. My 2 went at it like this last year and nobody could answer why (they were together for 4 years without a problem). The breeder that i bought mine from said sometimes males go through this (don't know if that's true or not). If it were me i would buy/build another cage and only introduce them when you want them to mate. If not the fighting may continue.

For the nails it's the same as cats or dogs, if you know how to do them. It's hard for me to explain (better to show) but i will do my best. Take a look at your beardies nails you will see that the base is much thicker with and towards the end it tapers off ahh forget this i can't decribe anything i'll do a picture.

hope this helps

Jamie
