newspaper hideout?

My new baby cal king has a beautiful set-up, but he seems to just love hanging out underneath a couple of peices of newspaper that were put in there temporarily during his first feeding. I think he likes it because they're over the heating pad, which is covered by substrate. It's not natural(or pretty!), but I want him to be happy. So is it safe?

i for one will most likely never use anything but newspaper for a substrate. on the other hand i dont care if the enclosure looks nice or not . newspaper is cheap and easy to dispose of when soiled and thats all that matters to me. my snakes seem perfectly happy with newspaper as a substrate and even though they have hides, they still like to hide under the newspaper occasionally. what kind of substrate are you using and do you have hides available to you king?

Im the same with my Nelsons Milksnake. He almost always goes under the newspaper. Not as bad as he was now, He goes in his hideout with damp kitchen roll. But often he goes under the newspaper on the cool side, Maybe to cool off on the bare wood i don't know. But i presume theres nothing to worry about, I'd say it was safe.

Just be careful when trying to find him, and when puttin the objects back in the vivarium, do not squash :P

nothing wrong with it at all.....if he's happy, your happy right!:medbigsmi just change it out on a regular basis. Goodluck!

They like a hide where they are safest. A hide that is just the right size for them to fit under while being about to feel the sides top and bottem feels safer than a really tall, hollow fake rock where they can only touch one or two sides, because its harder for a big predator to get into a small area undetected than a big one.

I think you should put a bit in there for him to make him a happy reptile after all a happy reptile = a happy owner and the same thing goes with my leo cause he's glued to his humidity cage!
