Ahhh Finally!! Gonna go get myself a digital cam!

I think I have my mind set on the Canon Power Shot. I want something I can take extream close ups with as well as take videos. Anyone have any other suggestions?

i may be biased, but i love olympus cameras, and i would suggest the olympus c700 if you want close ups....
it has 10x optical zoom and some digital zoom as well.
the canon powershot G2 is great as well

They are both excellent camera mfg's but really if its the canon a40 that your looking at..with the latest price reduction..its one of the best deals going right now!!! Im divided by olympus and canon...either are great..just depends on what features you want...all of the official ssnakess.com show pics etc are taken with a Canon G2..and its a great camera

I use the Olympus C3030 Zoom (now they're up to C4040, so mine is outdated). After checking reviews, side-by-side online comparisons, I decided Olympus was the way to go (also helped that my last two 35mm cameras were Olympus).

No matter what you end up with, you won't ever miss fiddling with film, getting back a roll of pictures to find they're useless, and the cost of developing won't kill your budget.

I dont have a particular Canon in mind...I have just heard that the Power Shots are great cams.

Hilde (dragondrop) You take awesome pictures! Thanks for the imput...I will definatly look at them. Are you able to take videos with your Olympus as well? You have no idea how excited I am to be finally getting one! LOL

I want to be able to take a picture of a geckos eye ball....lol. & take video as well. But still reasonably easy to use. I have a feeling I will be in the store awhile before I decide...lol.
Anyone with pictures from these cams mentioned..please post them so I can see. THANKS

I can do videos, sound, close-ups to 8" optical/digital zoom equiv to 7X auto/manual settings, and it does not eat batteries like they're free (I average 120-140 pictures with flash and LCD going, on 4 rechargeable NiMH) . A lot of cameras can get closer, and have higher zoom, but how often do you think you'd need more? I'd rather put the cost for higher zoom and macro into something I woud use more often. If you go to my Webshots album, you can see some closeups I've done of insects in the " Bugs, slugs, critters & creepies in my garden " album. Unless you really want to get into the nitty-gritty details, this camera zooms close enough. The features on the newer models are close to the same, a few differences, but the quality is undeniably Olympus

(Um, I can't take all the credit for the pictures - seems this camera takes the pictures I want to get, regardless of how much I flub the settings

)

these were taken with an olympus c-3020, the reason i like it so much is cause you can tke such high rez pics with great quality and yet when you reduce the rez so the file size will be less, the quality isnt really comprimised. THe higher rez lets you zoom so much more when you put it on your PC to get even closer in.

the first pic is taken on a middle resolution, you can go quite a bit higher with this cam

Personally I like our Sony Mavica CD-300, but you will pay a little extra for it's mass storage feature re-writable cds. most of the pix on our webpage were taken with it. It's comparable to any other camera in the 3 megapixal range but our camera has been discontinued in favour of a 4 megapixal camera (the CD-400) which would give you even better quality.

As for picking which camera you should buy, it's to bad you can't try a bunch of cameras and see for your self what you like best.

We just got an Olympus C4000 and are very pleased with it. Excellent accurate color, great resolution, good zoom and compared well with Canon G2 except a lot less expensive and it felt better to handle. That was the deciding factor for us - after all the on line comparison of features - it came down to which one felt more comfortable. You need to upgrade the batteries, but currently you get a free 64mg card which covers battery costs. Whatever you get, you will love it, we are taking photos constantly.

I have always used Olympus. I have a C-4040 now, I used to have the 3000. They take awesome pictures and movies. They are up to the 5050 now that takes some really good closeups. They are about $750 I think which is a good price for a 5mp camera!

One thing to consider is memory cards...I know that Sony uses memory sticks which only work with Sony products. That's really cool if you have or are planning to get newer Sony things.

Most, (I think) other cameras use flash cards...which are manufactured by many companys and therfore can be found at good prices. They are getting bigger (memory wise) all the time.

There are card readers, camera ports and such.

The new Olympus C-5050 takes both smartmedia AND compact flash. It will also take the IBM microdrives...although I don't think the 1 GB drive works. I think the 512MB is the max. Not sure on that though. You can use both types of cards at the same time too
