Bit by my Ball

Im pretty sure its coincidental, however yesterday my ball went to town on my finger and held on for a good 3 minutes before releasing. Today I woke up feeling pretty crappy with a headache and stiffness in my neck and back. I immediately irrigated the wound and used hydrogen peroxide on it and Neosporin. It is also flu season around here, so who really knows what im feeling is attributable to. Anything else I should do? I cant remember if I had a tetanus shot within the last five years but that may be an option I guess. Ill keep ya posted.

well, you should have cleaned the wound right after getting the snake off your hand. Just like you would with any other animal bite or scratch.

I personally haven't heard of bp's causing anything like this, but maybe someone with more (or any, lol) snakes could tell you more.

Boids dont have anything even remotely resembling a venom gland, so all you got in your wound is saliva. It should have been cleaned right away. All animals have bacteria in their mouths, and wounds should be treated with alcohol, peroxide or some other disinfectant. I dont know what the incubation period is for bacterial infections, so I dont really have an opinion on wether this is coincidence or an infected bite wound.

With any puncture wound an up-to-date tetanus shot is a must! You're supposed to have them every 10 years but if you're hittin the 7-9 year mark I'd go have another one just to be on the safe side. ( check with your Doctor when the last time you had one was ) Wouldnt want anything to get infected any further. But i do think that its nothing to worry about. just keep cleaning it, and if a little later one you notice the holes ( where the teeth were lol ) becoming itchy dont fret about that either, just scar tissure building up from the inside.

Before taking delivery of my "Princess" (4 foot Royal), rescued from a bad situation (malnourished and un-cared-for), I bought several Ball books, researched the net and THOUGHT I knew all there was to know about caring for Royals (Yeah, right!) =). I had owned an African clawed frog and some smaller reps over the years, but never a Royal.... Anyway, about three weeks after getting her, she bit the dog poop out of me! While I have a pretty large ecnlosure, I have really been trying to let her roam in the classroom (I'm a special education teacher), before the kids get to school. I know it's anthropomorphic of me, but I think she "enjoys" her adventures in the room and it is well secured with no dangers. The morning I got bit, she had wound herself around a column book shelf. (Looked like a medical doctor's caduceus!) =) I had a great time watching her climb and became so engrossed that I forgot the time. At the last minute, before the kids arrived, I realized I needed to get her back into her enclosure. Princess REALLY liked being wound around the book shelf and after some gentle nudging, pulling, and pleading in an attempt to get her unwound she bit the snot out of me! I got the message very quickly and let HER decide when to unwind herself from the column. The bite didn't hurt all that much, but it bled like crazy (I figure something in her saliva kept my juices flowing (?). A quick wash, some bacitracin and inspection of the site led to the discovery of the "prettiest" little tooth marks in a semi circle on both sides of my finger. (Tetanus up to date, by the way).
I have cats and one thing I should have learned over the years is that HUMANS need "training" from time to time as well..... Just as I have learned that I am only to SERVE "my" cats, I am to also to "serve" "my" Princess. My Royal trained me well that morning and I am definitely an old dog who CAN learn a new trick (Or at least not to go pulling on a snake). =) Take care. Tom
