Tentacled Snakes in Canada

I keep 2.2 and I'm having a lot of fun with them - 18 years of keeping aquatic turtles certainly comes in handy, 'cause I can keep water clean and mildly acidic, which seems to be all the zoos I've contacted have told me to do. I've been spending far too much time watching them hunt (they certainly are eating machines).
If anyone has kept them, have you ever noticed pattern phases excluding each other? One male is striped cream and brown, the other three are mottled black/grey/white and they definately like hanging out together while stripy is on the other side of the tank.
