jcp on cedar shavings
im looking to buy a jcp theres a pretty cheap vpi one locally but they have it on cedar i dont know how long its been on cedar, its about 2.5 feet and i guess about a year old, i was wondering how long it takes to do any permanent damage, if i bought it and put it on an appropriate substrate and kept it healthy would i have a good chance of becoming healthy(how long would that take) or would i be plagued by vet visits and bad health and a short life for the lil guy?

How long it takes to be permanently damaged is almost impossible to quantify, given how little we know. Body weight, "freshness" of the cedar, level of humidity, amount of ventilation, starting health of the snake, etc etc etc. IMPOSSIBLE (and foolish) for us to even guess if it would make it.
I wouldn't spend the money on it, but if you can't find one that's kept properly anywhere else, then check the snake for vigour, and if its strong and seems outwardly healthy, then get a discounted price (after all, the snake is being slowly poisoned) and keep it on newspaper with fresh water all the time.

They won't give you a discount. The next joe schmo will come along and not know the difference and buy it anyways. Heck, the store will probably sell that guy cedar shavings to keep it on as well. I would be very surprised if you get any discount.

thanks, i think im not gonna go for it, it seems like a waste tho for a poor snake to be poisoned, and i wanted a jcp and saw one that needs better care, i still feel bad and want to try to save him from that but i really dont think i have the money to properly care for him if he does need vet visits and everything so soon from the buying

If the shavings are kiln dried the oil has been removed from them so there shouldn't be any danger to the animal. Randy
