I don't own any, but I love the genus as a whole. Very cool snakes, but probably not suited to beginners, as they can be irritable and there is no effective AV for them.

Well, I was assuming (and yes, I know it's not always best to assume) that the animals you have listed in your sig are your only animals. I also ASSUMED that you have not kept hots. Now, that may be a big assumption, and if I'm wrong, I apologize. By beginner, I meant beginner hot keeper, for which Atheris sp. would probably not be the best choice.

hi i keep A. squamigera. they are docile as can be

butthen again I never go near them to test how docile they really are hehehe. mine eat fine and they are WC from congo last year. I love these animals.. they are nice to see. and when they feed you have an easy pet. the venom however is a different story. There is NO antivenom for this genus. This year in Holland a guy got bitten by a Atheris and he was flatline for 3 times . They used polyvalent Echis serum and luckaly it worked. But still it is a very big risk to do this. The best this you can do is just to stay away from his mouth and fangs

I keep 0.1 A. chloroechis.She is some what docile.I wouldn't stick my finger in her face lol,but I do have to tease feed her.She has never missed a meal. It just takes a little time for her to responed.I have to say that it's one of the best display animals I have ever owned.I can't describe the beauty of this viper in words,it's a must have for any hot keeper.I also have to spay her down with water so she will drink.She will never drink from the water bowl.It's ok that she take more time to work with than other animal in my collection.

I keep 1.2 Atheris sqamigera since beginning of this year. All of them eat fine and look great. They very pacific and dont be aggressiv so long as u dont do anything in the Terrarium. I keep them by temps going around 24-28 C° daytime and at night temps fall down trought 22 C°. Spraying her case 4 times a week with temperated water so they can drink.

Heres a pic of one of them taken a few weeks after birth.

awesome bush viper pics! i love the "ancient" look they have to them.i think it might be a little risky keeping them though because there is no antivenom for them but theyre awesome just the same

Atheris are among my favorites, its unfortunate that many specimins that come into captivity are in horrible shape. Finding quality specimins is not easy, but definitely worthwhile. I currently keep A. squamigera and A. chlorechis. I've wanted to keep A. hispida for ages, but haven't had a good source for them.

I find them actually pretty calm and easy to work with compared to most arboreal vipers. The no-AV issue is a huge concern, and definitely not something to overlook when considering keeping these guys.
