General rule is a minimum of one square foot of floor space per foot of snake, with an ideal balance of length and width dimensions (obviously a square won't give you a very good gradient, and if depth is sacraficed for length, the snake won't have adequate resting room to coil). This really doesn't allow much room for any type of decorations however, if you are interested in that.
