can balls eat hamsters or is that not a good idea?

they can, but sometimes they get "addicted" to them and wont switch back to rats. imo, if they will take rats, you should start them on rats from day one.

Ditto, I also think that hamsters are the cowards way out of a ball not eating. Stick with it, and get them eating a healthy food item.
