I'm having the same problem, hoping that some of the veterans will shed some light on their techniques.

I've been in the woods behind the house a couple of times and haven't seen anything either. Last summer there were a couple of black rat snakes hanging around for a month and a half. I actually had to move the largest one twice to cut the grass. One even spent several weeks on my back porch behind the hot tub. Yesterday I was cutting the grass and around 12:00 I looked and an 18-24" black rat snake was sunning in the driveway. I tried to get down to it but before I could stop the riding mower and get off it wiggled back into some ground cedar next to the front porch. When I lifted some up and looked where he went, there was a shed skin. So I'm guessing he's been around for awhile. Now I'm wondering if they are nesting under the front or back porch.

do you mean gater snakes atblover?
just curious because many people say gardener snakes because they are found in back yards (gardens).
Common misconception

There is a marsh about 1/2 a mile down the road from me. My son and I look for snakes there. 99% of the time we find some while walking through the grass.
I tried the bush down the road, about 2 acres in size. Found nothing.
