Eastern coachwhip

This guy wasn't too happy to pose for pics and gave me a nice bite on the cheek for his trouble.

What a find! And a bite to the face too- living up to the nick name "Nasticophis".

Just out of curiosity, I ran a google search for Coachwhips and ran across this on the Western Ecological Research Center web site.

Quote:
Additional notes: A fast moving diurnal snake that is difficult to capture. Bites, excretes musk and twists body when handled. Large individuals should be handled with caution.
Thanks for sharing the pic and experience!

How's this????
Some of the red on my face is not blood but embarrassment!
I have found and photographed 3 from this same spot in the last year. All have been over 6'. This one was the heaviest I have seen yet and had a slight stub tail. The area is destined for destruction soon. Too bad..

David, these guys make that eastern king look like a puppy!
I posted on another site in more detail the mistake I made.
I was crouched and it was o.k. 'til I stood up and gave him leverage. Plus I had just grabbed him and the distance from his head to my hand was longer than the distance from his teeth to my head!
No pain, just blood.
I'd like to be able to release a bunch near the site they're bulldozing someday. Who knows? Probably never happen. Releasing is iffy at best for many reasons, some legal.
If I get babies this year from my others,I'll let you know.

I know that's an eastern coachwhip but what other morphs are there ? Is there any dealers in the US that are likely to be able to get them. I'm after some more coachwhips but they're bloody hard to find in the UK, so will probably have to import them.

I do not know of any specific "morphs" of any of the ssp. but do know they are quite variable over their entire range. The easterns can be from solid black to solid tan and many are both with differing amounts of red mixed in. The westerns can be totally red or even PINK. Those are unbelievable.
You may try one of the US wholesalers/import/exporters.
Maybe Glades Herp in Bushnell FL.
If I discover any sources of cb. I will be sure to let you know as well.
I hope to produce some easterns this year.

Thanks, I'll try those. I'm also hoping for some hatchlings. Western's though just the normal cream/grey. Hopefully getting another this weekend, western again I think.
