Got eggs! Got a question!

I woke up this morning to my girl laying the last of her 6 eggs. I went to take her off them to put them in the incubator and they are very soft (this is my first experience with breeding!). Is there a certain amount of time I should wait for them to harden so they are easier to handle and move without damaging? Thanks!

They won't harden. Snakes eggs are soft. If they harden, then that sucks, because they'd be infertile.


Who told you that they harden up?

I dont think anyone did. I think I just expected they would. Anyway...After about an hour I moved them to the incubator and all seems fine! Temp is fairly stable and they all appear to be fertile. Thanks Jeff!

I've noticed that on the rare occasion that I catch a clutch immediately after being laid that the eggs can be more jelly like but that fertile ones firm up a little (while still being flexible) very quickly. Maybe it’s some adaptation to make them easier to lay or something.

Congratulations Jamie!

The eggs never harden but they do become dry to the touch and more leathery. If not already plump, they will plump up within days. They will stay that way until about 3 weeks prior to hatching at which point they will start to dimple and sink in. Just prior to hatching they will soften right up in order to allow the hatchling to cut its way out.

here's what my grandma told me.

Put eggs in saucepan
fill 1" above eggs
bring to a boil and remove
let sit 10 min

They should be nice and hard now. Add salt to taste

Thanks for the congrats all! What temp do you all incubate at, will slight fluctuations within the range make a huge difference?

I think somewhere along the line someone noticed that temp fluxes can result in a really neat pattern, but TOO MUCH flux will kill your lil guys.

I would geuss that minor flux is inherent and not going to hurt, but make sure you keep it in a healthy range.......Id wait a few clutches before you start playin with temp variables and patterns.....Good luck.

Well things seem to be good one week in. I just aired out the egg container for a minute and put the lid back on and closed the incubator. It didnt drop the temp much during the air exchange. The eggs look awesome and the temps are staying exactly in the correct range.
