swimming!!!
today i let my beardie swim in the tub to have some fun. he started to swim around a bit and i think he got some water in his ears or something because he started freakin out. i saw the water level was up to his ears but i didn't think water could get in them because of that film like thing they have in there ear hole. he tried to scratch at is face with his back foot so i took him out of the water and dried him off and he seemed fine then. any ideas why he started to freak out and scratch at his face like that?
thanks for the help
chris

I agree with peterm15, letting him soak is a good idea, but don't bring the water level too high, im sure a desert lizard isnt the most agile swimmer.

i know they like the water and i don't fill the tub up to the top i just put a few inches in the bottom just to reach his neck. surprising they are very good swimers they look like a crocidile when they swim. i just want to make shure the water wouldn't hurt his ears.

I'm sure he will be just fine, beardies are great swimmers. My female loves to swim. It's actually pretty funny watching them. I know if i only put in a few inches it's not enough for them watching an adult swim in only few inches make you wanna add more water for them cause they really can't do much.

I find when i soak my beardies( once a month) they love to swish around in the water and scratch themselves( almost like they're cleaning themselves, scratching of any loose sheddings) After a couple of minutes they just like to relax in it and get out when they want.

Howdy.... my beardies also will swim. When they get ready to shed the skin they love it and I have video of two of them in th water dish going arround in circles. When I put them in the bath tub they swim lenghts. We put the water warm for them and they swim arround head under the water then come up for air. It's so funny. Anyway I thought I would share that. I took video to the vet and he sent it to other vets who were amazed that they would swim. Who would have though.

One of my beardies tries to swim at bath time, she just keeps paddling, but does not go very far. It is rather cute.

our beardie loves his baths! if we fill the tub up about 6" he'll swim around for literally 20 minutes before he wears himself out! (we do keep our hand just under the water level for him when he's ready for a break)......and another little bit of info about our beardie......he loves showers! we set up his reptile hammock (sp?) at the far end of the tub across a corner and he'll sit there for the whole time one of us is in the shower! he actually gets grumpy and flares out his beard if the water stops hitting him! and once i heard my gf giving him crap because he jumped into the tub, ran up to her foot and then proceeded to try and climb her leg! he also loves to swim around in his water dish! he tries to fit his entire body in the dish (which is a little pointless because he can't) and when he realizes he can't he climbs up his log, bob's his head, and then does the ray charles head swing/bob, and then jumps off his log and into his dish......he makes one heck of a mess, but it's really funny to watch!

i fill mine about 2 inches, and he seems terrified of it. his head is a safe level above the water though. he just puffs about to about twice his width and rushes for the sides. the minute he sees my hand he books for it and runs up to my shoulder and starts to snuggle against my neck. hes young though, so i hope it'll pass.
