Collection of skin for education!

EVERYONE:

Thought this was interesting to get a few photos before I hand over these shed skins to my nephew for show and tell at his school. It' s always a good thing to teach the youth about animals and reptiles and my passion for constrictors. We had him over yesturday and he was asking questions like he was working for CNN to get ready to show these skins and teach his classmates about constrictors. Being 5 years old and fearless he has taught have my family to not be fearful of snakes through his knowledge and fearless attitude. Well below are all the saved skins of boas that I am either breeding or getting to breed this year as well as some recent sheds from sub-adult boas.

Shed skins range from 9.5 feet to 2 feet, the 9.5 foot skin is from a 7 foot boa breeder now.

Very Nice, it's good to teach a much younger generation about herps earlier so they don't have some of the same ignorance about them as alot of people do now adays. My three year old sister begs me to hold Beaner when she comes over and he's a 3 ft plus Savannah who she's seen me fed on multiple occasions. I usually just hold him across her lap while she pets him so she can feel like she's in control of him. She just saw my new Colombian too and she immediatly begged me to hold him as well, I just let her pet him though but I think she knows more about reptiles (and Dora the explora) than most teenagers do, and she can barely talk, but it's funny how they learn what they're interested in. When she's 7 or 8 I'm thinking of giving her some sort of baby I produce by then not sure what but I know my mom will help care for it as she took care of my brother Beardie for almost 2 years untill he finally took it with him.

Anyways enough rambling on, to make all that very short I think it's good you teach your nephew about things of this sort :P

That is a great idea Tony. Being a teacher I'm always doing educational shows in my schools and soon for every elementary school in my district. Being in the school system means I can use the school to educate not only the students but the public too. In March I'll be using my school gym to have a show to raise money of the local SPCA. There will be admission and picture taking with 100% of the proceeds going to the SPCA.
I think it's a great thing you're doing sending those skins in because you know some of them won't make it back but it's for the great good of our hobby.

Yup he is cool with me, he loves animals that makes him cool in my heart, at times I pick him up at school - his friends come over and ask your the snake man right. Totally excited hoping I got stories to tell them of me and my animals. Guess he talks about his uncle alot with his curious friends the man with the snakes, lol.

Thinking this over though - how different is it with all of us with snakes and the old lady next door with 40 cats

It really is great teaching kids about herps so they learn what wonderful animals they are instead of scary awful creatures like some movies and tv make them out to be.

I personaly let my nephew (7) hold my bp when ever he comes over. now its aways the first thing he asks to do. he is even bugging his mom to let him get one. i might by him a corn snake for his b-day. it makes me so happy to see a kid share the same love for herps as all of us here @ ssnakess.com

Update today Friday my nephew is showing his class all those skins plus some boid books. And also letting them know in the summer that I will be bringing in 5 snakes to his next show and tell in the summer. Can' t wait to hear his day with his friends and class about his show and tell of these items.

How were you able to preserve the skin?

All I did was get them when they were fresh, unwrapped them, layed them out flat for a few hours to let dry and that is it. Once that was done I simply hanged them away and collected them for a while. Having over 40 skins my nephew took all of them to the school. So nothing really techincal in preserving these skins was done

Tony, you are a man after my own heart! I'm known in my town as The Snake Lady! I go into the schools and open house's at Vets offices to show the snakes. They kids love it, all ages. I've let a 5 year old girl with Cerbreal Palsy hold my snakes, with close supervision at all times of course. I'm crazy, not stupid. My son is so blase about them now, and my foster daughter brags about "her snakes" at school. If I can help one person overcome a fear, I feel great. It's a joy

hell atleast your snakes are shedding full my last boas had a hard time with that all though the humidity was very low...anyway id love to get my little brother(10) and sister(14) into herps its cool my sister loves my gecko along with my brother but shes still scared of the snakes

UPDATE from the show and tell at the school.

I picked up my nephew at school that day and was very surprized because the class and teacher had a surprize for me. Seems after my nephew did his Constrictor show they all decided to do some art. Many went on the internet and found alot of my posts and others from this site. Each child decided on a favorite snake to draw and color up after. My nephew remember the site and my alias name on it and showed them what these snakes look like with their skins. Well I was earlier to pick him up but once I got there each child did a small presentation on there drawing and the species they learned about. I was amazed how organized it was in just a few hours and how proud my nephew was to do the show and tell and be part of the class effort to surprize me with all the classmate effort of loving boids. There were a few chameleons, Jungle Carpets, boas, and 2 alligators as well. Some even did a few photos of a few favorites. Going through them all I believe the popular snake picked out was Emerald Tree Boas with 6 drawings done on this species. Right behind was the Jungle Carpets or Jaguar look alikes. Then Ball Pythons and to my amazement the Pied Ball caught the eye of 3 children. So any Pied breeders out there the new generation in Ball Pythons want Pied so start breeding heavy its the new demand

I thanked all the children individually to make them see I appreciated each of there efforts. Also the teacher for being so organized with them on this surprize to me. We are in the works to possibly do a small tour in my collection to show the children there favorites

This hobby has always put a warm spot in my heart and even more when people break there reptile fear through my animals. But when children are so excited and yet open minded with my nephew' s help that really brought me some joy to see he is becoming so involved in animals and especially reptiles (boids), my sister is still a little fearful but he has showed her - why, uncle' s animals love me - his qoute

Thats great Tony! My wife's little brother is 6 and he took a bunch of my snake skins to show and tell along with pictures of each snake. The kids loved it and one boy traded a whole bunch Yugio cards for one 9 ft skin. His mom and I made him give the cards back to the boy because it didn't seem fair. We let the boy keep the skin too. Her brother was a little upset but I told him the next skin will be even better because it will be even bigger! He finally got his huge skin and has as large collection of wild and captive born snake skins I have collected for him. I recently got him his first snake, a snow corn, and he and his mom take great care of it. He is a smart kid and listens to every word I say. He surprises me all the time with things he remembers and says. He is always reminding his mom of things I had said about husbandry.
