Seaway Serpentarium *pics*

I'm finally getting the opportunity to share a few pics from a visit/photo shoot at the Seaway Serpentarium...............

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/schlegelii-112704.jpg">
......a couple little girls born at the Serpentarium in November 2004.

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/cerataphorus-112704.jpg">
One of my favorite Vipers......actually I'm a sucker for just about any Atheris.

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/gila-112704.jpg">
Juvenile Gila.......the only time I could get the little guy to sit still was when he was eating. This guy was CB in Canada by a private breeder in 2003 I believe.

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/gila-112704-2.jpg">
What a monster

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/aurifer-112704.jpg">
Who doesn't love aurifer's. The Seaway Serpentarium was one of the first facilites to captive breed this species.............sorry for the poor pic, this guy just wouldn't sit still one I disturbed him for the pics.

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/nigroviridis-112704.jpg">
Again, poor pic......this guy is pissy. Very difficult to get a good pic without taking a bite in the process .

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/lateralis-112704.jpg">
The Seaway Serpentarium has been very successful with this species as well. They are so variable (and yes, this is truely what these guys look like, no photoshop).

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/trigonocephalus-112704.jpg">
Another of my favorite species........

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/barnetti-112704.jpg">
If these don't look familiar, don't feel bad. I have never seen another picture of them before either This is the largest collection of this species in captivity. This pic could have been better, but it was the last animal of the photo shoot and my memory ran out........not to mention he was a little restless.

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/parviocula-112704.jpg">
The Diamond Python of the <i>Bitis</i>.......Truely awesome!

NON-VENOMOUS

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/fimbriata-112704.jpg">
This is the only living specimen of this species in captivity.......a very friendly little girl too

<img src="http://www.niagarareptiles.com/SeawaySerpentarium/undescribed-112704.jpg">
This is a newly discovered species of what appears to be a New World Python caught in Guatemala. There were seven specimens originally collected, and this is the only remaining.......for the time being.

If I lived anywhere else in the world, I would probably not be able to see most of these species in person, let alone all under one roof. Of course there are a few hundred more animals at the Serpentarium, but 156 MB only goes so far, and I have my favorites

Wow thanx for sharing the pictures is there a common name for the Abronia Fimbraita? Why is it the only living speciem of that species in captivity - is it a new species or..?

Any connection to the Seaway Mall in Welland? I remember they had a serpentarium a while back. That undiscribed species is interesting; does the nose actually stick out like that? When were they collected? When will they be published? What became of the other six?

Great bunch of photos!

ydnic - Members of the <i>Abronia</i> genus or aften referred to as Alligator Lizards. I'm not aware if this species has a common name or not. It was thought to be extinct since the 1940's until the first specimen was collected a couple years ago. This specimen followed a year or so later after many man hours of searching. Unfortunately the origional specimen passed away shortly after this one was found.

CamHanna - Yes, the Serpentarium used to be located in the Seaway Mall in Welland, ON. I was a volunteer at the time which is how I first met Karel. It closed in 1994 and has recently re-opened it's doors to the public out of Karel Fortyn's private facility located in Welland (9 Steel St.).
Taxonimists are currently working on the official description of this species. They were collected last year, but the other specimins collected didn't survive.

Ryan - This is just the tip of the ice burg

Yes, I know, I know. That is the nicest tip of the iceburg I've ever seen, and now I want to see the whole thing!

We've heard about the collection from you and Karel, but until you see pictures like those, well.... see you soon. We are definitely going to try to co-ordinate a trip out there very soon, this time for real! We will let you and Karel know when it will be.

Really great photography, I just looked at it again. Incredibally absolutely amazing subjects and pictures - very well done!

You can email me the ones that didn't make the post if you feel like it. Thanks a lot!
