Vet: Dog Survives Snatch by Eagle, Cold

BOZEMAN, Montana - A dog survived a flight in an eagle's claws then endured a week of sometimes subfreezing weather before finding its way home, a veterinarian said Wednesday.

"He was chilled, but he seemed to be able to walk," John McIlhattan said, referring to Freddie, a 13-year-old Pekingese mix. "He seemed remarkably chipper for what he'd gone through."

Earlier in the day, Freddie showed up at home weighing about 3 pounds less than he did when he was last seen in a neighbor's driveway on Dec. 29.

"We're all just amazed," said Jill Slevin, who said she hadn't found a way to tell her three children that Freddie probably wouldn't come back. "He's our miracle."

Slevin, who was alerted to Freddie's return by the barking of her other dogs, said she put him on a blanket and carried him to McIlhattan. The veterinarian said he surmised Freddie had been snatched by an eagle after examining cuts around the dog's neck.

Freddie had also suffered an eye injury and was covered by ice and insect bites. McIlhattan said the dog probably found a warm shelter, but had to share it with pests.

"He's a pretty lucky dog to be getting home in this kind of weather," he said.

in the late 80s or early 90s (can't remember the year) in Valdez Alaska a bald Eagle snatched a little dog right in front of his owners. It it is a long story(I'll just give the high lights) and though a dog becoming chow for a bird is sad the reactions or actions of the owners husband were sort of funny. The Eagle swooped down from his perch on a totem pole(sp) and snagged the dog and flew off with it, The woman who owned it broke down and her husband helped her back into their RV as he walked around to his side he made the (raise your arm make a fist and pull it down and in quickly) Yes jesture with his arm. Guess he didn't care much for the dog......

thats awsome i wonder how the dogg exscaped from the eagle, I have seen videos of golden Eagels knocking Mountain goats off of the mountains to kill them then eating them at the bottom of the cliff, they are amazing birds.
when i was up in Timmins for a while i read the paper about a Horned owl attacking humans heads because they had fuzzy balls in their touqes.

So that is why fuzzy balls on touqes are so hard to find.
