I personally highly highly doubt that they are kept like that. They would be un able to find food, poo, or pee..its just not practical AT ALL to keep them like that, pet store/bad owner, or not.
Then again, if it is cleaning time its still a bit stupid.

reminds me of these local idiots around here that have somehow been around forever. its a pet store in the mall. i was in there today with a friend and they have always kept their reptiles in horrid conditions, but today there was a display tank about 2'X2'x2' with about 10 snakes in it at least. in this tank were BP hatchlings, BCI, IJCP, blood pythons, a burmese python hatchling, a coastal and a childrens python. no water dish and a big ol hot rock in the middle. never in my life have i seen more unhealthy looking snakes. jagoffs.

Well there is one store in town that it isnt alot to have anything other then colubrids but they have a "special" section in the back.
I went in there the other day it was just brutal they only had a bci and ball python but the ball python was in horrible condition. It had retainded eye caps. Half shed no water dish or hot rock just subtrate. and it had these weird wart looking things that were pussing out the sides. It was very discusting. They said they didnt need a hot rock because it was hot enough back there from all the heat lamps from the display enclosures.....

ya some people are ridiculously stupid, I rescued and rehomed a red eared slider from a now ex- friend who had the turtle in a 10 gall, no filter, no basking light and cleaned the cage every year!!! The worst part was he didn;t even know he was doing anything wrong and didn't care claiming it was only a stupid turtle without feelings. His dogs weren't in much better condition but human scoiety wouldn't do anything even after calling them 5 times but I suppose we can't expect much from them.Really sad to see though.
