Sav & cage size?

I am curious how long my cage will hold my savanah. It is exactly 4'L, 2'H, 2'D. He/She is approx 18". Has sand on bottom, a retreat thats 2'W 18"D and 4"H. Also has a large water dish. and obviously lighting etc. Just wondering at what size will i have to move him/her into a larger cage. I also think its probably on the tall side, but oh well he can learn to climb .

Try not to think so much about the size of your cage.....think for about how usful it is to your monitor. A cage with a surface area of what you mentioned could be fine for a single Sav it's entire life if it was properly set up. Of course there would also need to be significant space for burrowing throughout the enclosure as well, and recognizable decor.......

Also keep in mind that Savannas (or any other monitor you might buy) should mature by about 12-16 months of age. Therefore, if its going to outgrow a cage, it'll do it pretty quick. They don't take 4 years to get 4 feet like everyone thinks. They have phenomenal growth rates if you let them.

cool thanks. Do you thing i should make up a dirt mix so it can dig?

Absolutely. Sav's should have sufficient burrowing substrate available to them at all times, in all temperature gradients, regardless of size/age. They were born to burrow. I feel that not allowing them to do so is unnatural, and inappropriate.

Awsome thanks. I will be making up a couple garbage cans full of "digable" dirt first thing tomarrow. How deep do you think? I was thinking maybe 6-8 inches, or is deeper better?
