Bringing snakes across the border?

Good day all,

Okay so whats involved with brining snakes across the boarder...

Say if someone wants to buy ATB's from the US... and bring them into canada... what would be involved? Is it very complicated / expensive?

usually for funky species CITES is involved which makes the answers to your question yes/yes

But I take it by the ugggg in your last post that you know that already

For CITES species, it will usually entail some costly paperwork and inspections by the USFWS, customer, and/or others. I believe for ALL species, CITES or not, you are still required to have them inspected before them leaving the US.

In my one experience bringing an african house snake across the border by car, it seemed that nobody wanted to have anything to do with the snake and insisted that I keep it in my car, out of sight, lol. All I ended up having to do was show my receipt and paying duty at the border.

Country:
Non-Cites(venomous/coulubrids)....receipt and pay duty
Cites(boas/pythons ect)...CITES and Customs paperwork --in advance, not at time of declaration/crossing, receipt and pay duty.

I found that the Customs people , like most others, don't like snakes, so they do not want to check them out much.
"Snakes ...aauuuggh..why do you want to bring them in...Go ahead"

EDIT....ReAD Carfully...as I said for NON-CITES(app I or II) snakes such as (most) Venomous and Colubrids all I have ever needed was a bill of sale and a list to show the Customs of what I have.
For BOAS and PYTHONS that are usually CITES I and II It is much more involved and should be done long before the trip so that the paperwork for the US F&W and CITES can be completed and processed...You better read up on what you are going to need and what snakes you want to bring back to Canada
---BETTER---

Chas*e,

Assuming that you intend to do it legally, it is more than just having a receipt and paying the GST & PST (no duty). As of 1997, you are supposed to have any wildlife (including CBB herps) leaving the USA be inspected by USFWS. How exactly this happens, and whether it costs money, varies depending upon the circumstances- especially the location.

There have been many threads on this in the past with some very thorough answers by myself, Roy Stockwell, and others. Anyone intending to import animals would be well advised to read some of them.

Shadow, I know how you feel, there are some damn sweet ATB's available in the states. Too bad they are a pain to bring back. Right now I have 4 of them and have got them all at very reasonable prices here in Ontario. Juwst takes alittle searching. One pair is currently breeding right now so I hope I'll have some little ones next fall.. Good luck in the search. Feel free to drop me a PM..
