getting rid of mites?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if there was any way of ridding mites other than using nix, blacknight and provent a mite. I heard vepona strips will work but how do u use them? And how long do you leave them in the cage for?

Thanks,
Ben

Vapona is toxic to snakes. Why are you so opposed to using nix? It will cost you a grand total of 10 dollars.

Nix is best of course, but yes Vapona can also be used. Very toxic but if you have a large Boid collection that is crawling it may be more effective than trying to Nix a bunch of large possibly aggressive Boids a few times. Vapona will kill em all quick but its something that should only be used maybe overnight once in conjunction with a Nix treatment. The Vapona block type work best & can be cut into smaller chunks & then put into delicups with holes. The snakes should never be allowed to come into direct contact with it & only exposed to it for a very short period of time 6-8 hours maybe, not all day or week. All water should be removed & replaced with fresh & lots of ventilation is required also. This stuff can & will make your snakes sick whether you think it does or not. Vapona is usually considered the "lazy man's method" & Nix is much more effective as it kills not only mites but their eggs as well & is much safer when used properly. As stated in the case of many large Boids or say venomous Vapona can make your life easier but is far more toxic. If it is not required I would go with Nix treatment. Mark
P.S. just to throw it out there, if proper quarantine & treatment is done as part of the aquisition of ALL new specimens mites would never be a concern & the orginal quick NIX spray or dip of a new snake would eliminate them all in the beginning & one would never even have to ever consider Vapona.

Hey thanks for the reply. Mark, how do you use nix? Do you just add some water to it and spray the snake and thats it?

Thanks,
Ben

I use Provent- A- Mite, works great never has failed, once we had a fe mites that we wound in our bark mulch, so we just put papaer towel down instead after we used bleach water in the cage.

Bleach- water works well too, but Provent-A-Mite is much easier to use.

i have used tons of things. the easiest ones that have worked are nix and vapona. but honestly if you bath your snake in the gold listerine and use a bit of vapona (1x1 inch) you will get rid of the mites no problemo. given that you have cleaned out the entire cage.
