Rescue Burm

This big girl came in today. Usually I find homes for Burms as quickly as possible. She is 13 years old and about 12 feet or so. Because of her age, size, and temperment, she is going to stay in my collection for use in educational programs and displays. She does not have any apparent medical problems, although she will be vet checked soon and I will run a fecal as soon as she gives me something to work with. It is a female that giets to live out the rest of her days in comfort educating the public and will never be bred.

She was being kept in a 75 gallon aquarium in the winter and put out on a screened in porch in the summer! I am amazed that she is in such good shape and so docile.

I still need to come up with a good name for her.

She seems to be in good health. I checked her with my stethoscope and did not hear anything in her lungs (RI is always the biggest concern when dealing with Burms, and rescues in general). Hopefully my vet will make a house call to give her a once-over. That is a big ball of snake. Sweet as she can be, but I am still not taking any chances with her.

Well she blew out her throat a couple times last night. Cross your fingers that it is not RI.

Well she is 68 pounds. The bad news is that she does have an RI. I have raised her basking spot to about 97 with the cool side at 83 so that she can help herself a bit. Since I increased the heat, She has moved under the light with her head directly in the warmest place. My IR thermometer places her head temp at 96. That seems high to me, but she has a great gradient and nature and instinct have kept these animals alive much longer than we have. She has a small waterbowl with fresh water.

I have Amakacin ready to go, but I am waiting to talk to my vet tomorrow. I am trying to stay waway from Baytril for several reasons. But if I have to use it, at least i will have Baytril 100 (SuperBaytril) on hand in addition to normal Baytril.
