This is what herping is all about! PIC

Being out in the country, good times with good friends and finding cool species!

Good stuff.

Beautiful country, good friends, and snakes...doesn't get any better than that.

Cool picture.

That landscape intrigues me for some reason. I think its because there's no trees on the hills. I noticed it also on the Rattlesnake Count pics that Scales Zoo put on here a while back. It just looks wierd to me. It doesnt seem like snakes would inhabit such an open area...

It's a beautiful part of the country. Anyone who hasn't been should make the effort. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Nice pic. Anymore from the outing?

Tim, my camera wasn't in use during that time as the friend who took that pic's camera, made mine feel too jealous.

Shaggybill, it's no surprise. It's one of those things I still wonder about til today. Finding snakes in the places you'd least expect them to. What you think as a perfect snake habitat is all topsy turvy here. Bare open hills and a couple of holes in the ground is where you find em. After a while you'd get the eye for it, like Ryan Wunsch (SCALES Zoo) does.

Are there any birds of prey in the area? It seems like they (the snakes) would be an easy target for them, just sitting out like that.

I've noticed raptors around flat open fields but not amongst the hills. The odd one or two but not as many as you'd find out in the fields.
