discoid substrate
I was wondering what people use for a substrate when keeping discoidales roaches. I've been using aspen shavings but I'm not sure that is the best choice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm using aspen, aspen or ceder are the best. Ceder are bigger chunks so a lot of people will use those. I like shavings more (aspen or ceder only) because theyre easier to find and less chance of mites.

I just use clean egg crate. Works great and is real easy to clean. It is also really easy to find nymph's.

I'm with Vanan.
I was under the impression they require a bit of humidity. How do you do that with shavings as substrate?
Mine love a good misting....

I haven't bred the things for a few years now, but when I did I found stacked egg crates in a bare aquarium, rubbermade or whatever. An occasional mist and lots of food is all that was required.

Actually, for the most part, my discoids are kept pretty dry. I only check one them once a week, if even that, and spray em down then. Not even enough to fully soak the substrate.
I use the no substrate method for my hissers and lobsters but use peat moss for the discoids, giganteus and surinams.
