new sinaloan

So I made an impulse buy today at the West Palm Beach exotic show (small little crappy show). I got a Sinaloan Milksnake! He/She is about 8 inches long and is housed in a ten gallon with hides on both sides, ambient of 78-80 and a basking area of 85-88. He is very active. I tried to feed him a pinkie but he didnt take it. Must be too soon. I will try again in a couple of days. I will post pics soon!

Cool!!! Sinaloans are great milks. VERY underrated, in my opinion.

Your temperatures sound a bit high to me though. My sinaloans RARELY use the warm side of their cage. I would lower your cool side to about 75F and get the warm spot to about 85F (maybe even lower) if I were you.

My ambient is the temperature of the room. No real way for me to cool it down, right? As far as the warm, I got him as an impulse buy and because of the hurricane I couldnt get him a thermostat of his own so he is on the BRBs thermostat and thus getting the same temps. Trying to keep it under 88.

The 88F is even a bit warm for rainbows, from my understanding. Maybe test some other rooms in the house to see if there are any that are more suited to housing these two species. It's not really fair to make them adapt to YOUR requirements. It should be the other way around.

Now are we talking ambient or basking? I only have one room that is suitable for the snakes. The ambient is generally around 80 during the day because we dont cool the house as much while we are gone. At night it dips down to between 76 and 78 based on whether I close the vents or not. As far as basking, I had heard 85-88 for rainbows and near the same for Sinaloans. Is that not right? The care sheets on rainbows are all over the map. Some say 80, some say 90. I have to say the rainbow almost never goes to the basking area.

So its been 10 days now and he still wont eat. He just shed today and is more wild than ever but has no interest in pinkies, dead or alive, washed or unwashed, cut open or not. What now? He must be hungry. He is tiny. Thanks.

Jamie no worries just yet man even at that size 2 weeks without a mean isn't gonna hurt. Just givetthe little guy some alone time to settle in. Don't touch him or try to feed him nothing that will cause undo stress. The other thing is he may be shy so after about 4 or 5 days of no contact with you try leaving the pinky in over night.

I would move him in to something a bit smaller. Milks tend tend to be quite shy, and the openess of a glass ten gallon can prove to be too much sometimes. Substrate that they can burrow in helps as well (and you can usually eliminate hides). Put him in a small plastic container with substrate he can burrow in (I prefer Carefresh to everything else) and leave a mouse in there overnight. My room is quite warm as well, so I just leave the colubrids unheated in rubbermaids. Good luck with your little guy

So I took him to my local reptile store today and they assist fed him. It actually wasnt stressful to him at all. As soon as they put the head to his mouth, he started to take it down. So glad he got a meal in him and now it hopefully will be smooth sailing!

Next time put him'her in a small glad rubbermaid container with a paper towel ball in his cage and leave him in there over night with a f/t (frozen thawed) pinkie mouse.
