what kind to get

I've been thinking about getting a python. I have no experience with pythons/boas, though i have had kingsnakes and various lizards. I live at college and whould therefore need something small or something that does not need a big cage. Also, I am not interested in getting a ball python, my friend already has one and i am hoping for something a little more exotic. I've been looking at spotted pythons, ringed pythons, and irian jaya carptet pythons. Any information/suggestions about these species or another species that would make an interesting addition would be greatly appreciated.

maybe a children's or spotted python is more for you. They’re docile and fun to work with, and they are a great species for new python keepers to learn the basics. a carpet python can get between 4.5 to 6.5 feet mainly 4.5-5.5 feet. i would still recomend a childrens python or a spotted python if you dont want to go the ball python route. i have a ball and he is amazing i love him to death. i think balls are great beginner snakes

There is also the question of availabilty, and if thats an issue for you, I reccommend a ball python. Males tend to be smaller than the females, and you dont have those messy egg issues to deal with Whatever you choose, do your homework on that particular species first to make sure you can handle the husbandry requirements with your college lifestyle.

Happy Snakehunting!

I dont think that the fact a ball python is a commonly bred snake makes it less Exotic or interesting but if your friend already has something. Maybe a Colombian rainbow boa. any type of sand boa. an ATB if you have room for vertical caging I guess it all depends what you define as small.

I would definately say Spotted or Children's. Amazing little snakes. Great personalities.

I would also say children's or spotted. Or if you would like a boa instead, a Rosy or Sand Boa. All of which would be fine for a dorm room or school size aprt.
Cheers,
Trevor
