Mite questions. Sorry.

I know that you guys are probably sick of replying to topics about mites but I have researched and the questions I'm going to ask I couldn't find anywheres.

I'm going to use the Nix treatment and I read up as much as I could about it. When you spray the snakes with Nix are you supposed to wash it off after a certain amount of time? If so, how long do you keep the Nix on before washing it off? Same question with the cage and cage furniture.

Do you just go out and buy a gallon of bottled water and put the Nix in? I wasn't too sure about that when I read it.

I have a plastic hide inside their cage right now and I was wondering if it would be safe to Nix that and then put it back in since it's plastic and there isn't anywheres for the mites to hide.

Those are the only questions that I can think of right now. I have to go out and buy everything tomorrow since today is labor day (I found out that they have mites last night).

Sorry that I'm asking these. Hopefully you guys won't mind me coming back if I think of any more questions though.

Thanks for the help.

-Jamie

NIX EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!

NIX all hides and let the nix dry (that's how it works!)....... spray your snakes so they are very wet with the soloution and do not give them a water dish for at least a day.

spray the area around the tanks and let it dry also....... do not wash it off! Spray the tank, and anything else the snake goes near with a light misting and let it dry also. if you use any substrate, throw it out. spray paper towels with nix all over and let them dry before putting them in the tank with the dried nix solution.

your mites will be gone, don't worry.

Do the whole thing all over again in a week........ spray any new animals that come into contact with your snakes with nix too. I keep a bottle of it handy at all times, and you'll have LOTS left over even after 2 whole treatments.

If you mix it with a gallon of water (distilled water!!!!!) it is not toxic to them, so if in doubt, nix the hell out of it! Just mix it into the bottle, then pour that into a spray bottle as you need it.

Yes, nix everything, all plastics (mites can most certainly get on plastic) and anything in, on or around the area..... i believe you are to also spray at least a yard around the tank, as in the floor and walls.

Again, do not wash it off.

Hope that helped.......

Jessy

Oh wow, are you serious? I didn't know that you had to spray that far around the tank. I thought that it would be fine if I just sprayed the desk that the tank is sitting on.

I also have a problem. I let my snakes go on the floor, my bed, etc. While I'm watching of course. But would I need to spray all of that too? Would it be safe if I just washed the blankets on my bed that they were on? The last time they were on my bed/floor was two nights ago (when I found the mites on them).

Thanks for your help Jessy.

No need to use distilled water, normal tap water will do unless you draw your water from on a well, or you have very hard water. Also, instead of spraying the snake with Nix, I just fill a medium rubbermaid half full with warm tap water and mix some Nix in. Throw them in, lid on, and allow them to "swim" for ten minutes or so. Always doesn the trick for me. Spraying deosn't always get into the nooks and crannies that mites like to hide in, it's not complete enough for my liking.

I was just told to use distilled water cuz it keeps for alot longer and doesn't go stale..... the first time i did a nix treatment I just used regular tap water, but i used pretty much the whole thing.

Apparently distilled can be stored for like 2 years, and if this guy mixes the whole bottle with a gallon of water, it will take him that long to use it!

I can see a whole bottle being too much but man do you ever use a LOT just to "de-mite" even one snake....I found I went through a LOT each time just to do the snake, the cage and all the accessories. More than I thought I would use. It's cheap enough to throw out any unused portion anyways

Jessy if you were talking about me, I'm a girl . I think a gallon of water would be alright because I'm going to have to fill up the rubbermaid (It's kind of big, I couldn't find a smaller one). I'm actually kind of worried if I'll have enough lol. Hopefully I won't need anymore because the Nix that I bought cost me 12.99. I'm in the process of mixing the Nix and water right now. I'll update later. Thanks again for the help.
