36x17x12 okay for an adult Cal King?
If not, what do you recommend?

Thank you! That's what I gathered from caresheets, etc I'd read. But I wanted to get an opinion of an actual person - guess I just wanted reassurance. Thanks!

If 36 X 17 is the floor space it is good - 36 X 12 would be a bit tight for floor space for an adult female. Our big females are very active and over 4.5 feet long and are in 4 foot by 18 inch cages. The 36 inch long is fine for an adult that is under 4 feet though,

36/17/12 would probably be satisfactory for an adult specimen. i think those measurements are pretty much the same as a 33 gal tank. i have an 02 cal king in a 33 gal and he seems to be growing out of it so he will be housed in a 48/24/12 cage soon but im sure 36/17/12 would be alright.

Opps, I messed up. The dimensions are 33Lx17Wx12H.
Too small for an adult female?

The standard guidelines are that the length plus the width of floor space should be more than the length of the snake - so technically this cage would be ok for snake up to 50 inches, or just over 4 feet. Most Cal kings get longer than that by the time they are adults.
I think these guidelines are ok for snakes that are not active much but with big colubrids that tend to cruise around, it is borderline. So - in my opinion, not big enough for an adult cal king, but fine up to about 3 years of age. I am sure there are many that are kept in that size, but for active snakes like these, the more space the better - I want mine to be able to stretch out.

Thank you - I'm thinking I'll use the cage for someone else. She is pretty active and growing fast...so I'm thinking she'll be a nice sized girl. I'll either go iwth a 36x24x12 or a 48x24x12 cage for her.
Thanks!

Here's some pics of her when I first brought her home a few months ago (May, I think).

I need to get some new pics because she's grown quite a bit.

I use tubs that are 34" long 16"W and 6 1/2" High.....my male cal king seems comfortable in it, but he isn't the biggest of kings....on the other hand my large female corn is somewhat squished and I can see a need for larger colubrid tubs in my future because of this.

Thank you Marisa - that gives me something to go on. I have a feeling she's going to be a big girl, and with her being so active I think I'd better think bigger.
How long and how old is your male?
