New Veiled Cham

Hey all -

Some of you know I just got a new male veiled a few days ago. In some ways he seems to be doing very well. He arrived healthy looking and not skiddish at all. He pooped the first day and everyday since. Also, he ate a little bit his second day here.

But a couple things have bothered me a bit. He never basks, ever. Which is strange to me. the temps are usually around mid to high 80's ambient temp and the basking is mid to high 90's. Also, he's still very dark. I have caught him while he's green a couple times... but, for the most part, he's aways dark brown. Is this something to be worried about? I'm probably just being overly nervous but I'd like to make sure

I think that's it. Thanks for any replies.

Hes probably just getting used to his new environment. I dont think there is anything to be to conserd about. What is his humidity like? Cage dementions?
But if it is his new environment he should be as good as new in a week or so, maybe sooner. Does he move around alot and just avoid the heat lamp, or just not move too much. If hes not moving much then he is still probably adjusting. But if he just insnt going neer the basking spot maybe move the lamp 4 or 5 inches further away. Also he could just be basking when your not around.
I find it easier to observe if they dont know you are there watching, when they are first aquired. At least that was the case with my two nosy bes. Nut then again all chams have a different personality.
good luck with your new treasure

Thanks for the reply. He does seem to move around a lot. He just doesn't bask. I'm beginning to think the temps in there were a bit too high so I'm gonna try and lower them. That would explain the lack of basking.

He could be still very dark cuz he is mad at you. My male veiled, while usually very content and unbothered by my presence, would get very dark if he didnt want me around, right from the time he was a baby. And you should have a nice cool spot for him to go to, and at night, drop the temp to lower than 70 if possible.

Thanks for the reply man.

Thing is, he's in a large closet and very secluded. Even when I'm in my room (where he is) he can't see me. I check in very rarely and when I do it's clear he has been dark before I checked in on him. I'm pretty sure it's the temps to be honest with you. I'm going to be watching the temps more closely over the next couple of days and I'll let you all know how it goes.

Cool. You said you have him in a closet? could you explain your set up alittle more. Just worried he wont get enough ventilation in there.

Well his 100 gallon reptarium is in a closet. I just wanted to clear that up right off. The closet dimensions are probably like 3 1/2 or 4 ft by 9 or 10 by about 12 or so... depthxlengthxheight.
