I hate UPS
Feel like ranting so here it goes......
I f***ing hate UPS! Whenever anything gets shipped from the U.S to Canada it gets stopped at the border and a tax is applied and you have to pay the tax when the item is delivered. I have no problem with that, but what UPS does is because it can take a long time for items to get through the border because of the volume of packages they use a 3rd party broker and pay all the fees upfront to expidate through the border. Then when you get the item you have to pay the taxes plus a fee to them for getting it through the border.
I had a Propertional Thermostat shipped to me from GCS Reptiles, great unit, couldn't find it in Canada cause Grant stopped selling them, so I got it shipped. The declared Value on the item was $150 US, so I got charge $20 in GST and PST at the border fine. But F***ing UPS charged me 40 F***ing dollars in F***king brokrage fees. I mean COME ON! They charge me DOUBLE what the goverment charges to get this item through the border and THEN they don't even give me a choice if I want to have it sent through this brokgrage service or not. They show up at my door and say "Hello sir, please drop your pants and bend over we have a package to deliver". I try to boycot UPS as much as possible but sometimes I forget to tell people not to use them. So here I rant letting everyone know what F***ing pricks UPS is and don't use them. Use any other postal service and you went get bent over for brokrage fees.
Thanks for listening.

I've had the same charges from both FedEx and Purolator. They seem to be relatively standard charges with the large courier companies.

I am very adamant about telling US shippers/vendor that I do NOT want anything shipped by UPS. I'm not sure on which board it was posted but someone had to pay more for brokerage fees than the actual cost of the item. I think he tried some kind of appeal but they told him he was S.O.L.

I've had things shipped Fedex and USPS (United States Postal Service) and I never got gouged as bad as UPS does to me.

Sorry about the language, just slightly pissed off, I figured I stared it up enough that there was enough plausible deniablity.

UPS is cool....if you like packages all shredded up
OH YEAH, one more question to further add to my confusion concerning the naming of pet stores rule
why is it that we can mention such businesses as UPS in negative light, but if Bob's house of Turtles rips me off I can't say that?

I was just thinking the same thing as I was reading this post. Only thing is, UPS's business isn't going to be hurt by this thread, and most what is said is opinion, which we are lawfully entitled to. There is a fine line between slander and opinion, so I'd just be wary of any negative comments of any kind. (Reason why I'm not responding to the actual issue here... LOL)!

UPS changes standard brokerage fees as do all the courier co. The brokage fees also include all the duty charges on the item(s) as well & that goes right back to the Govt. they also had to do the shipping & pay all the duty, gst & pst to the govt. & provide all the legal forms along the way to do so such as "Declaration of Orgins" etc etc etc & irreguardless of who ships what, someone will have to broker it for you & you will have to pay for these charges & their brokerage service. Just another reason to buy Canadian when possible, Mark
P.S. its more the Govt. then the couriers, but of course there is $ in it for them too as that is the nature of business afterall.
P.P.S. whats worse is Canada post charging you $5 to charge you gst on an item. $10 item costs $5.70 in tax, 7% gst plus a $5 fee for the form they fill out DOH!

Whenever possible, I have things shipped via air cargo. That way I go to the airport, do my own 'brokering', and save those charges. I've asked about the extra charges and was told it's standard for anything that enters the country by ground transit of any kind. As soon as it touches Canaidan soil, somebody has to do the paperwork. Ground shipping means it touches our soil at the border. If you're not there, the brokers do the work for you and charge a fee. Going air cargo means the paperwork is done at the airport before it's released to you. In this case, you can do the paperwork yourself.

how much a business may be hurt is 100% speculation....surely we wouldn't have a policy based on speculation alone

What I hate about UPS is that they have to hold the item(s) at their facility until the customs inspector makes his rounds, sometimes only once a week. Makes for extra waiting time. My last package came from eastern US entered Canada in Winnipeg (was held a week), was mistakeningly sent to UPS in Calgary prior clearing customs, had to be shipped back to Winnipeg to do so & then returned to Calgary to be delivered to me (2 weeks after first arriving in country, overnight my @ss LOL). Apparrently if if doesn't clear customs at the port of entry they (UPS) are subject to a $3,000 fine by customs Canada, thus the return to Winnipeg to be brokered. Ah Red Tape is fun! Mark
P.S. UPS did contact me in the beginning & give me the option to deal with the brokerage myself if I wanted.

I have been shipping and getting items from ebay rencently and I will only do it through USPS (getting) or Canada Post Expedited Parcel (sending). Everything else is a total rip off.
I despise companies and people that refuse to ship any other way than UPS, fed ex or Purolator cuz the KNOW about the charges & brokerage fees.
I don't think I should pay some UPS guy $60 USD to be my rep at the border, cuz UPS is getting that same fee for the 700 other boxes on the truck!
GRRRRRRRR @ them!

Sometimes, it works out cheaper to have things sent by air. I have been screwed many a time by brokerage fees... I remember paying $50 on duty + fees for a $10 13W3 -> VGA adapter... Normally, I don't bother buying anything from eBay in the US unless I stand to save at least $100 as it's just not worth it.
