Well, I think the most common snakes for beginners would be corn snakes. Their hardiness, good feeding responses, and good temperaments make them an excellent beginner snake. However, like most snakes, they will need to be fed rodents. Garter snakes are easy to keep, but if you plan to move to other snakes later on, you might as well get accustomed to feeding rodents now. Most colubrids (corn snakes, rat snakes, king snakes, etc...) are excellent for beginners. Purchase one from a reputable breeder near you, and you will get all the advice you should need.
