Thief!!
I was in my local herp store (the animal connection) today to get a new light for my rainbow boa, and I caught some ba**ard trying to steal some baby herps! The place takes great care of their animals and only sells them to people who are knowledgeable and who demonstrate they will take care of the animal. I was checking out the herp room when a guy came in and brushed his hand against all the locks on the cages. Then, while the herp care specialist was selling a leopard gecko with her back turned, I heard a noise. When I turned he was pushing on the top of the sulcatta toroise cage, and he saw me and quickly put his hands in his pockets. Weird, but no evidence he was stealing yet. I turned around after a few seconds and he was doing the same thing then quickly turned around as he saw me. After about a minute I turned slowly and he was sliding the praying mantis cage over to access the baby sulcatta's door! As soon as he put his hands in the cage I ran to the herp care specialist and whispered "Some guys stealing the Sulcatta!" I would have said it earlier but I wanted to make sure he was stealing. She saw him with his arms in the sulcatta cage and yelled at him, threatened to call the police (she would have called but he would have denied it since he hadn't been holding the baby sulcatta yet). Anyway, he got kicked out and all the employees stared at him with orders to remember the face and call the cops if he ever came in again! I'm not sure how the genius planned to walk out with a 5" sulcatta though LOL...
Oh yeah, when she asked him "What the hell are you doing!" and he had his hands halfway into the cage he replied "Looking."

Good for you!!! I wish there were MORE people like you around! Personally, I would have called the cops on the b@$t@rd! But you're right... he didn't actually HAVE the animal, so they would have just let him go... :P Too darn bad the store didn't have a monitor or caimen there... if he had his hand in one of THOSE tanks, I would have just let him get bitten THEN ask what the heck he was doing... bet he wouldn't say he was just "looking" then! LOL!!
Take care

I have had a few animals stolen when I ran a shop. Hamsters, mice, etc. Luckily no herps. But then, people liked us and we always had at least 3 people on the floor every day (small store, maybe 1000 sq ft).
Good thing you were there!

I hate people who steal, especialy people who steal animals because they almost always die! The guy looked kinda like a gorrila lol. Omen, I agree, it's kinda hard to piture how he expected to get away with a sulcatta lol!

Hey... never EVER underestimate a thief! They will find places to put things you would never dream of! There were several people caught on video in a supermarket trying to steal various meats. One lady was wearing a skirt and actually put a huge roast between her legs. Another man was wearing a hat and stuffed a roast under his hat, the only reason he was caught was because someone saw blood dripping down his face and was concerned. When he refused medical treatment, the store manager got suspicious and called the cops. LOL!!
When I was working at a pet store, YEARS ago, some idiot tried to put a small caimen down his pants! LMAO!! Needless to say he was caught when he tried to walk out the store cause he was walking weird and I think the caimen actually bit him! LMAO!!
Take care

one guy won a Darwin Award when he tried to steal lobster's from a grocery store. he stuffed them down his pants, and they gave him a makeshift vasectomy. or so the story ran. not sure if it's true or not, but it's amusing nonetheless.
