Green Trees Hatching

The Green Trees hatched out a couple weeks ago......I've just been slow getting pics up. Some of you may recall that my female GTP didn't lay her eggs in her nest box......she decided to scatter them all over the back of the cage.....which quickly made me realize that maternal incubation wasn't going to be possible. Anyways, 12 eggs were laid (100% fertility) but after 2 weeks of incubation 3 eggs died which put me down to 9 fertile eggs. I incubated the eggs at 30.5 C (87.1F) for the full incubation. I decided not to fluctuate the temps of the eggs as in my experience the more you mess with someone the more likely you are to kill them. I pipped all 9 eggs at 49 days, however, the first ones didn't start sticking their heads out until day 53. This added delay in "hatching" was probably due to the constant temps throughout incubation so hatching should have been a little longer than if I had turned up the temps to 31.7 C for 4 weeks.

Anyways, all 9 babies were alive on day 49. 2 fully crawled out of the egg and died and 2 poked out their heads about 1.5 inches and then died. However, the remaining 5 are out and doing great! All 9 babies were yellow.

This is a joint venture between Lance and Peggy Townsand and myself. My male was not big enough to breed so their male bred my female from Feb-March 2004. It'll be interesting to see what these guys look like when they grow up!

Enjoy,
Corey

I've been afraid to ask how they did, but getting 9 eggs to full term is still something I'd be proud of. Too bad about the 4 of them, though, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

what makes them die immediately after hatching....as an inexperienced breeded I'd think that getting out of the egg is the hardest part, it seems like they were "home free"

Congrats Corey on the five that did hatch; they look great!....it's frustrating losing them....I lost eight out of a sixteen egg clutch.

It looks like I might be going to get a second chance for better results again this year though.....I just had another one of my females ovulate last week.....it's the one I bought from you two years ago.....she's now refusing food which is a good sign....just waiting for the pre-lay shed now to know for sure if it was an ovulation.

The babies look great Corey, congrats! That's too bad about the others, it must be pretty hard to lose them that late in the game.... I'm sure that the other will do wonderfully for you though!

I'm not saying anything nice unless I can have one...........or your other female that I like

Seriously though, I think that you and Lance did quite well with your first chondro experiences and I'm confident that we'll be seeing more baby pictures in years (months possibly with Lance) to come!

Congrats guys, I'm green with envy
