ron tremper lay box?

I was on ron tremper's site today and I saw he puts the opening on his laybox containers on top so the laying medium doesn't get out. Has anyone tried this? are the geckos able to find the hole and get in/out easily?

Yes, we do this. When they are babies I keep the opening on the side but when they are larger we keep it on top to avoid the mess. Especially with gravid females, they love to kick the dirt around. They even get some out the top, but for the most part it stays clean. Here's a picture of one of our tanks:

I use that method to. Just cut a 2X2" hole in the lid and I find that they realize that its there faster if you put them in the lay box so that they know how to get in and out.

Most of the laying boxes I use have the holes on top. I have also found that with shoeboxes you can put the hole near one corner and they don't (usually) dump the substrate out, they tend to dig at the opposite corner.
Then again, I have 2 sisters who insist on piling the dirt where they like to lay their eggs, doesn't matter where I think they should put them. In their cage the dirt is likely to end up anywhere no matter where the entrance is.

speaking of humid hides and lay boxes..2 of my males decided to toss everything out of there containers. The holes are on the top corners.

Gecko team, just curious, how big is your cage? would a shoe box be to big for a 10 gallon? anyway I just put in a tuppeware filled with vermiculite and the hole is on the top, I put the female in there and she got out ok, but I didn't see her in there the rest of the day, I was only here for like 2 hours yesterday though. hope she can find it

In answer to the question about the shoe box being too big for a 10 gallon. I think it would be too big. I have a male living by himself in a 10 gallon and I use a baby wipe box for a hide. I have children so I have plenty of these laying around.

I just make sure it's cleaned out real well before using the for the geckos. I then drill a hole on top and it works great for one gecko. I also use these boxes with holes on the side for the babies.
