Geckos and UV light...

I have found some geckos need uv light, and some don't. Can someone give me some info on which ones do, and which ones don't? thanks,

Generally, the diurnal ones do, and the nocturnal ones dont need it,

Personally, I don't believe that any geckos need UVA or UVB with proper husbandry and supplemention.

I have raised and bred several species of <i>Phelsuma</i> with nothing more than harware store light bulbs and have had temendous success.

As and example;
One female <i>Phelsuma standingi</i> I kept produced 18 babies over the course of 5-6 months. I supplied no UV bulbs of any kind, just flourescent. Both male and female were supplemented only with MINERALL I, and of coarse were fed crickets.

This is just my opinion based on my thoughts and experiences.

Well I don't think they'd die without it at all... but wouldn't it be better to play it safe? Who knows how it could affect them longterm.

This could be argued until we are blue in the face. It has been tested with several species, but certainly not all. It is my opinion that is the life circle can go round without it, and the geckos ramain active/healthy/etc. there is no need for it (again, reminding readers this is only true under appropriate supplementation).

I feel it boils down to a matter of preference between keepers. I have found all artificial forms of UV to be absolutely useless and costly, and a very inaccurate means of determining the neccessity of UV for geckos.

ok well if you DO decide to use UV the diurnal ones such as: day geckos should have UV. Nocturnal geckos dont need any at all such as: leopard geckos, tokay geckos, African fat tailed geckos etc.

Hope this helps I like to play safe and use UV for the animals that I have which need it. although I have no diurnal geckos. I find it easier. But then again if you keep a large amount of diurnal specimens I bet its alot easier and cheaper if you do what Jon K does. I know I would. So I guess It really does depend on what YOU want to do. But if it's just for under 3 separate enclosures I'd probably stick to UV.
