Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371724/ after some 20 years they're finally doing it, a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. i'm sure they'll destroy it in many ways, but i think i'll see it anyways. any fans? anything you're looking forward to seeing or dreading as they're sure to screw it up?

There already was, sorta... A televised miniseries which you can obtain on video or DVD as a single feature, it was... not very good in terms of production values, but a quality time none the less.

The story evolved so many times that there is no single "right" way to do it though... The original radio series was different than the second run of the radio series, was different than the TV series, was different than the first release of the book was different than subsequent releases of the book was different than the last radio series...

What worries me though is that Douglas Adams passed away a few years back and, while all of the previous variants were different in subtle ways, they were all HIS creation and any changes were made according to HIS decisions. While is is possible for a director to create a motion picture that's true to the original author's ideas (i.e., Fear and loathing in Las Vegas) and any changes are subtle, it's not common.

As a fanboy I'll probably be dissapointed... but I'd definately see it regardless.

I've download the BBC series of this along time ago and enjoyed it. Its cool if you ever followed the doctor who series and enjoied that

i noticed in the individual books were different then the combined edition. there's an entire chapter missing.

why cant they just leave the original and best, well alone???

Well the thing is... what most of us know as "the original" isn't. It was originally a series of radio scripts which covered a similar but not identical plot and dialogue as the first three books. Even the older british releases of the first books are subtly different than the later releases and the one first published in America (which I'd assume was the same as the canadian printing since it's the first copy I've got with a canadian paperback price on the spine but...).

But again... all the previous tinkering was done by the man who created it, as he is unfortunately deceased I'm not sure who has character copyrights or creative control.

Thats so weird!!! I swear to god, just today in english, we were doing final projects on books we've read and a kid did one on hitchhikers..it was the first time ive ever heard about it..

Does that happen to anyone else, you hear about something and then everyones talking about it! soooo werid lol

Yeah but with Hitchhikers it happened in 1982 with the american release of "Life the Universe and Everything" ::grins::

I haven't got a clue as to what ya'll are refering to. Was this a series of books then turned into tv series now being turned into a feature length movie? Sounds interesting anyway.

Actually it was a series of radio plays first, then books, radio plays again, and then television, and then a few more books.

It truly has a cult following, those of us who follow it frequently can be found alluding to it in one way or another. For example my number on by race bike and the scout group I participate in are both number 42 for it's significant role in the story.

As long as individuals like Adams' editors Peter Guzzardi and Sue Freestone along with other close friends (and maybe a Python member or two) get involved it should be great. Adams' last book "The Salmon of Doubt" was published one year after his death, and was compiled from random bits and pieces which had been written while he was alive. As long as such comitted friends and family are involved I'm not in the least concerned. I also agree that there is no wrong way to tell it as Douglas himself has written various conflicting versions, so a few changes and discrepencies are a part of the continuity which makes complete sense in a Douglas Adams sort of way. Just as long as it's funny as he**, I'm all for it.

Although... The Python member who Adams was closest to was Chapman, which leads to the same problem... He appeared twice in minor roles on Flying Circus... How many others know what those two were? (And now I open up a whole WORLD of Adams/Python/Goon Show/Frost Report/Derek and Clive trivia in order to keep the thread going).

did anyone here read Falling Sideways by Tom Holt? the guy obviously adored Adams, but he just couldn't pull off the style himself and the result was a very irritating piece of literature. i read an interview with the screen play writer, who interviewed himself, and he does sounds promising however.
